Prince Edward Island's food has been crowned the second best in the world by restaurant surveyor Zagat.

"We are thrilled that Prince Edward Island joins the ranks of other amazing culinary capitals," Greg Donald, general manager of the Prince Edward Island Potato Board, said in a statement Thursday. "Having Zagat appreciate our island's local fare is a huge honour."

The Maritime province, known for its shellfish and potatoes, came second to Okinawa, Japan.

Zagat raves about Japan's pork sausages, sea kelp, noodles, and tropical fruits.

Louisville, Ky., Cornwall, England, and Vieques, Puerto Rico, round out the top five.

"Zagat's recognition comes as no surprise to me; Prince Edward Island has the best of both land and sea," said chef Ted Grant, an instructor at Holland College's Culinary Institute of Canada. "Having such direct access to fresh ingredients such as lobsters, oysters, clams, and potatoes allows chefs to create not only the freshest meals, but also the best tasting."
