Niagara Falls not that wonderful?
Thu, July 23, 2009

Tourism officials on the U.S. side of Niagara Falls said they passed on the opportunity to be among the New 7 Wonders of Nature nominees because of worries their cash-strapped community might be on the hook for costly promotional activities, though a spokesperson for New 7 Wonders said worries were unfounded.

Canadian tourism officials had formed the required supporting committee to make Niagara Falls eligible for the poll, but without American support the bi-national attraction was taken out of the running. Read the full story here.

Do you think Niagara Falls was robbed of a chance to be among the New 7 Wonders of Nature? Should the New 7 Wonders organization have allowed Niagara Falls to be considered without American support? Is Niagara Falls even a good enough attraction to have been included in the competition against other waterfalls like Iguazu Falls?

Don't forget all the water that powers the hydro electric dams there do not go over the falls. And that is most of the water. How much water is allowed to go over was decided by a binational treaty.

Niagara Falls will ALWAYS be a wonder to me. Take away the tourism and development and industry and you are left with a natural wonder that has existed for thousands of years!

By reducing the amount of water going over the Falls, we are preventing the erosion that inevitably will happen.

Look at the Falls, as you stand at the brink, from the american side or canadian.

I am in awe.

I think we robbed ourselves. Doesn't about 75% of the water in the Niagara river flow through the generating stations and not over the falls? No wonder it didn't make the top 7.

With industry along the US side, neon lights above them on the Canadian side, and much of her water diverted to power consumption, Niagara is still a wonder of the world, no doubt. It's not the highest, nor the most remote, but for for sheer volume, it's the grand daddy of them all. The Canadian side, for those that have visited it, is protected from development by the Niagara Parks Commission, established to prevent the development of the lands adjacent to the Canadian side of the Falls, and the entire river for that matter. So a walk in Queen Victoria park is a real treat. The US didn't follow suit, and the end result is all too apparent.

This was a commercial venture, and it makes for a (slightly) provocative story. Above it all, the roar of the Fallx remains a true wonder of nature...right in our backyard.

I was at Iguazu Falls a few weeks ago and it blows away Niagra.

Not worthy anymore. I have lived around N.F. all my life and it was once beautiful. Now it is a commercial, high rise, gambling centre. Certainly nothing natural anymore. Very sad to me. Exploited again like in the late 1800's.

Uh - NO - Downtown Bill, the Horseshoe Falls are almost ENTIRELY Canadian, save for a very tiny slice on the US side. The border does NOT run "through it" as you claim, rather along the far side of them (barely)

Do some research before posting such erroneous information please.
