London Underground celebrates 150 years
The birthday of the world's oldest subway will be marked by numerous events. On January 13 and 20, tourists and Londoners alike will be able to board classic period trains and relive the first Tube journey.
On these two days, passengers will be able to travel on historic restored trains including the No. 1 Metropolitan steam engine and Metropolitan Railway Jubilee Carriage No. 353, which are the oldest underground trains in the world that work.
Throughout the year, old trains, mainly running on steam, will be back on duty on other historic routes.
In collaboration with the London Transport Museum, a series of books will be published to mark this milestone.
The Underground is the oldest subway system in the world. It began operating on January 9, 1863 between Paddington and Farringdon on the Metropolitan Line. Today, the network has over 270 stations and transports over a billion people every year.
Celebrate 150th anniversary of world's first subway with tea and cakes
Commuters are being invited to navigate the world’s first subterranean subway system from the comfort of a luxury tea room, where pastry chefs have recreated the London Underground in pastry and cake form.
The Park Lane Hotel will be hosting a London Underground afternoon tea to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first Tube journey which took place on January 9, 1863, between Paddington and Farringdon on the Metropolitan Railway.
Pastry chef Sarah Hartnett’s London Underground tea service begins with a cocktail circa 1863 made with Beefeater 24 gin and blackcurrant tea, in tribute to the brand that was born in the same year as the Underground.
Guests will then take a culinary journey to an edible London Bridge, made with egg, crème fraiche, sun-blushed tomatoes and arugula; a leek and asparagus and double ‘Gloucester Road’ tart; a saffron roulade with Coronation chicken and spinach representing the Circle and District Line, and ‘Royal Oak’ smoked salmon bagels.
Next stop is a tower of scones accompanied by clotted cream, ‘Limehouse’ Curd, ‘Victoria Plum’ jam and brief layovers at stations like Bank, Victoria, and Paddington where travelers will sample hazelnut pound cake, orange Victoria sponge, honey, lemon and pistachio cake and a white chocolate Oreo Swiss Roll, to mark Swiss Cottage.
The London Underground Tea Service will be offered January 9 until February 10 and is priced at £41 (€50).
Meanwhile, Covent Garden in London will also be hosting a slew of events related to the Tube’s history, starting January 10.
