What kind of stories and photos are you looking for?
Have a look at our My Travels section and gallery to get an idea of what we like.
For stories, we're open to just about anything, so long as you can entertain and captivate us. First-person accounts are acceptable, but writing in the third person is recommended. Either way, don't forget to throw in background information about your destination. Adding personal anecdotes is key too.
We want to inspire more traveling, so we're less likely to publish hard-luck stories (unless you can make us laugh). Also, you don't need to travel far to get a good story; there's nothing wrong with introducing our readership to your local atractions.
Ideally, we'd like stories to be 600 to 1,000 words, but we have unlimited space for great writing. We need at least one photo from your journey to accompany the article. And remember, you're writing for a family audience.
For photos, exotic locales are always intriguing, as are unusual shots of familiar sites or settings. Interesting composition catches our attention, as do bright colours and close-ups. All photos should be crisp and clear. Black and white photography is acceptable, but colour is preferred. We rarely publish portraits or animal shots.
In what format do you need the stories and photos?
Send your submissions to wysotski@canoe.ca as an email with attachments. Word documents are ideal for stories, although you enter your text right in the email window. For photos, we prefer JPEGs and GIFs with a 72 dpi minimum and at least 500 pixels on the image's longest side.
Please remember to include you full name. For all photos, please provide a brief description of what's pictured.
When will my story or photo appear in the My Travels section?
Depending on the volume of submissions, your story should appear on the site within two weeks. Your photos should be posted even faster. We will notify you by email if the wait will be longer.
Can you advise me when my photo appears online?
Yes, we will be happy to let you know by email when your submission is posted.
Do I retain copyright on my photos?
When you submit your travel stories and photos to CANOE Travel's My Travels section, you retain all rights to your content. Should any division of the CANOE Network wish to use your stories or photos in any other capacity than the My Travels section, we will contact you first by email for your permission. However, by submitting your photos to CANOE Travel, you accept that no compensation shall be paid for the use of your stories and photos in the My Travels sections of our Website.
