Toronto's Billy Bishop airport, carrier Norwegian Air and the Peninsula Tokyo Hotel have been selected as part of Monocle magazine's top 50 in travel for the years 2012 and 2013.
Global affairs magazine Monocle has published its annual survey of the top 50 travel picks for 2012-2013 as part of its December/January issue. The magazine's editors selected the 50 best things from their travels. The list includes the best Asian, European and North American airports as well as the best hotel for kids and the most eagerly awaited infrastructure project.
Here are some highlights of the magazine's selection:
At number 41, Monocle's editor chose Haneda airport in Tokyo as the best in Asia. In 2010, a dedicated international terminal was opened at Haneda in conjunction with the completion of a fourth runway. This has allowed for a dramatic increase in international flights serving Haneda.
The biggest shakeup on the horizon came from low-cost carrier Norwegian Air. In position 38, the budget airline has spent a total of $21.5 billion on expanding its fleet to offer long-haul flights. The carrier is starting with Bangkok and New York.
According to the magazine's editors, the best camera for travelers is the new Fujifilm XF1, at number 35 on the list. Released in November 2012, the camera combines the new FUJINON F1.8 wide angle lens with a large 2/3-inch 12 Megapixel EXR CMOS sensor. The new Fujifilm XF1 is available in brown, red and black for around $449.
At number 22, the best hotel brand mention was given to the 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. The 21c Museum Hotel is a combination of contemporary art museum and 90-room boutique hotel. According to the editors, the design engages its guests with contemporary art. In 2009, the 21c Museum Hotel was voted the top hotel in the US in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards.
At number 21, Helsinki and Munich are rated as the best European airports. Helsinki is praised for the short distances between gates. Lufthansa's hub, Munich, is said to be better than "dreadful" Frankfurt.
The crown of best hotel for children was given to the Peninsula Tokyo in 16th place. Children can expect an assortment of bath toys and a wooden cot.
Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto earns the title of Best North American airport in 7th place overall. Named after a WWI pilot, as of 2011, it was ranked Canada's ninth-busiest airport.
At number 5, the most eagerly awaited infrastructure project is the Brenner Rail Tunnel. Scheduled to be completed by 2026, the tunnel will become the second largest tunnel in the world at 56km (34m). The project is a joint venture between the Austrian and Italian governments to create a railway tunnel through the base of the Brenner massif, connecting Northern and Southern Europe.
In 4th place, the best first class airline service goes to Lufthansa's upper deck in its B747-400 airliners.
In 1st place, the magazine's editors chose Hotel Daniel in Vienna as the best affordable hotel concept. The 116-room urban style hotel offers a central location as well as a bakery. Guests can rent bicycles and Vespas to visit the city.
