Hotel rates dropped by 6 percent on average from May to June in major European cities, according to the latest Trivago-Relaxnews hotel price index.

Following a spike in May due to various European public holidays, tourists can expect to find more reasonable hotel rates on the continent in June. Lisbon (-25%) and Prague (-18%) were among the cities with the most dramatic month-on-month declines.

As usual, the most expensive destination in the index is Geneva, where a double room will set travelers back €279. With an average rate of €94, Madrid boasts the most affordable hotels among Europe's major capitals.
