Nearly a quarter of Canadians (23%) will skip a summer trip this year because of the high cost of travel, a new survey suggests.

The survey from RetailMeNot.ca also found only 7% will travel overseas.

Soaring gas and accommodation costs are the No. 1 reason to stay home for 22% of Canadians surveyed. The high cost of airfare is keeping another 37% from skipping town.

And those who are planning to travel say they will do so on the cheap, with 28% expecting to spend $100 or less on summer travel.

They'll do that by passing up hotels to stay with friends or family, waiting for last-minute deals, spending their holidays at the cottage or taking trips close to home.

The Angus Reid survey of 1,004 Canadians was conducted between July 2-3. The margin of error is 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
