But it's a broad field and there are a couple of ways to narrow down the options. One way is to decide where you want to vacation and then look for opportunities in that destination. Another approach is to decide on the activity you want to do on vacation then look for destinations where it's offered.

Let's say you're interested in archaeology. Visitors to Colorado can participate in Archaeology Adventures at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center (crowcanyon.org). Doing their best Indiana Jones imitation, participants work alongside real archeologists in this historically rich canyon, home to the Pueblo Indians. Based at the foot of Mesa Verde National Park, there are a variety of programs lasting one or more days and a Family Archeology Week as well.

Or maybe you would like to help the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (appalachiantrail.org) preserve the world's longest continuously marked footpath for future generations. America's first national scenic trail covers more than 3,370 km of rugged high country. As volunteers built the trail, it seems fitting that volunteers can help restore it.
