Q: My husband and I are looking for an economical way to take our daughter on vacation. We hope you can provide us with some ideas.

-- E. Lytton, Thornhill

A: I would highly recommend a train trip like the one my mom and I did this past winter with Via Rail Canada.

While on board, families can not only take in the passing sights in a leisurely manner but also enjoy some great bonding time. We sat back in our roomy seats, read, chatted and watched the scenery change before us.

This summer Via has some great savings. The Kids Travel Free summer savings program is in effect until Sept. 15. Anyone older than 18 purchasing a senior, student (18+), youth (18 to 25), or adult-fare ticket in VIA's Comfort Class (economy) can bring a child ages 2-11 for free. Children under 2 years always travel free if they don't occupy a separate seat.

Via also has a selection of summer savings programs for adults. The Corridorpass provides 10 days of travel in the Windsor to Quebec City corridor in Comfort Class or Via 1 seating. Prices start at $314 for adults in Comfort Class. For more information, visit viarail.ca/corridorpass. For other summer discounts, visit viarail.ca/offers or call 1-888-VIA-Rail (842-7245).

Q: In late August, we'll be travelling across Europe by rail. How can we keep our belongings straight when travelling by train?

-- H. Keane, Brampton

A: Pack light and select a suitcase that's easy to lift. You will be responsible for getting your luggage on and off the trains and it's easier to keep track of fewer bags. Lighter luggage will also help prevent back strain or other injuries.

For instance, when travelling aboard Eurostar, the baggage limit is two pieces per person. The bags are not checked in -- passengers carry their baggage aboard and place it in overhead baggage racks or storage space at the end of each car.

Be prepared for embarking and disembarking. Europe's railroads pride themselves on punctuality and often station stops are only one to three minutes, so be on the platform when the train arrives and have all of your bags collected before the train reaches your destination.

Contact a Rail Europe travel expert weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at toll-free 1-800-622-8600.
