WHL announces Husky partnership
Calgary - Ron Robison, Commissioner of the Western Hockey League, announced today that the Husky Oil Marketing Company has entered into a multi-year partnership agreement with the Western Hockey League and its 15 Canadian based clubs.
The new WHL / Husky partnership extends for a three year period commencing with the current 2003-04 season and will include Husky becoming a major contributor to the WHL's league wide education and scholarship programs. Through Husky's sponsorship, the WHL will be in a position to further expand the awareness of WHL Scholarships for graduate players and broaden the scope of the WHL's education assistance currently available to players participating in the League.
The WHL is recognized as a leader in North America providing extensive educational opportunities for all players who play in the League. The WHL offers a full scholarship to every player who plays in the League. Each year, over 160 WHL graduated players attend a Canadian College or University of their choice on a full WHL Scholarship. In the past 10 years the WHL has awarded over 1,500 scholarships to players who have graduated from the League.
The Husky partnership with the WHL will also include participating as title sponsor of the Canada West University Husky WHL Graduate of the Month Award; the WHL Scholastic Team of the Year and WHL Player of the Month Award. The Husky Canada West University Hockey Award is presented monthly to the WHL graduate player who is judged to have the most outstanding performance both athletically and academically in the Canada West University Hockey League. The Husky WHL Scholastic Team of the Year Award is presented annually to the WHL Club that excels academically as a Team throughout the year. The Husky WHL Player of the Month is presented monthly to the player who is considered to have been the most outstanding performer in the League during the previous month.
"Husky's partnership will enable the WHL to generate broader awareness of our League's extensive commitment to education and the scholarship opportunities available to every player in the WHL" commented Ron Robison, WHL Commissioner. "Through Husky's corporate support, we will not only be able to enhance our education programs, but also ensure players in the system realize that the best hockey scholarship today is offered by the WHL."
