Tuesday, July 3, 2001Three Sudden Death Playoffs decide juniors who will represent Canada at the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship
BRADFORD, ON -- Players from Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, Alberta and the United States gathered at Bradford Highlands Golf
Club on Canada Day to qualify for a spot to represent Eastern Canada at the U.S. Kids golf World Championship. The low overall junior
in each age group won the right to represent Canada.
The 2nd Annual U.S. Kids Golf World Championship is a nationally televised event that will be held August 3-5, 2001 at Jekyll Island Golf Resort, Jekyll Island, Georgia. Juniors from all over the world will compete, by age group, in this three-day event (one day skills competition and two-day stroke play tournament) for boys and girls ages 12 and under. Fox Network will be televising the event for the second year.
In the 12-year-old boys division the overall winner was decided by a sudden death playoff. Britt Pronk from London, Ontario captured
the title with Stephen Kimber from Richmond Hill, Ontario and Saber Kanwar taking second and third place.
Humphrey Yeung of Markham, Ontario kept up his winning ways, taking the 11year old boys title and earning him a spot on the Eastern Canadian Team. This was Yeung's fifth consecutive CJGA win. Taking second place honors was Ben Daniele of Baie D'Ufre, Quebec. Rounding out the division was Jordan Lesansky taking third place. Stephanie Simich from Mississauga, Ontario took the Girls 12 & under division by ten strokes over Erica Rivard who finished in second place.
In the girls 10 & under Division Hayley Brown of Markham, Ontario was victorious, taking first place. Laura Hilderbrandt and Meaghan
Pototschnik placed second and third respectively.
Vivian Tsui of Markham, Ontario had a six shot lead to take the girls 8 & under division title. Brogan Mckinnon of Mississauga, Ontario captured second place with Madisyn Lewis rounding out the division with third. The boys 10 & under division was also decided in a sudden death playoff. Jonathen Kim-Moss of Toronto took first place after the first hole of sudden death. Russell Budd of Toronto took second place with Nick Halliday taking third.
The third sudden death playoff of the day was to capture the nine-year-old boys division. Corey Conner took the crown with Albin Choi
and David Park taking second and third place respectively.
Elliot Whitley of Winona, Ontario won his second exemption to represent Canada at the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship. Whitley earned a spot by taking the title in the boys eight-year-old division. John Foster and Jordan Oudyk took second and third place to round off the division.
After meeting Jack Nicklaus earlier in the day at the Board of Trade Golf Club, Gajan Sivabalasingham will return once again to the
U.S. Kids Golf World Championship with his win in the seven year old boys division. Ryan Jacobs, one shot back from Sivabalasingham
took second place with Jacob Cossmann taking third.
Taking the 6-year-old boys division by one stroke was John Nalbandian of Brampton, Ontario. Jacob Ewen from Mississauga took second place with Alexander Vegh and Paulino Fernando taking third. Juniors will attempt to qualify for the Western Canadian Team on July 10 at Sunrise Golf Course in Surrey, B.C..
