July 28 - 31, 1998

The U.S. Team captured its second consecutive World Junior Golf Cup title today after three days of intense competition between the U.S. and Canadian Junior Teams. The Grand Finale competition, played on the Jubilee Course in St. Andrews, Scotland, ended with a score of 18 1/2 for the U.S. Team over the Canadians 5 1/2.

The format for the first day of competition was team alternate shot which left the U.S. Team victorious with a score of 5 to 1.

Day 2's team best ball format saw heated play in all age divisions but yielded another American victory with scores of United States 4, Canada 2. U.S. team member, Matthew Rosenfeld got up and down on the 18th out of a sand trap to win the match. Canadian Team Members, Jonathon Lauzon and Ryan Roe Picked it up on the back nine of their match to win 2-1 after being down 1.

Team play highlights included exceptional play by Canadian Team Member, Court Watson who led the Canadians to win both of his team matches. U.S. Team Members, Heather Angell and Jay Morgan teamed up to capture two large victories in both days of team play. The United States' 13-14 Age Division, consisting of Brian Melvin, Jason Louth, Matthew Rosenfeld, and J.J. Wood, went undefeated.

The final day of competition opened with a score of U.S. 9, Canada 3. Twelve singles matches could bring victory to either team and the intensity was high. The Americans prevailed 9 1/2 to 2 1/2 to bring home another U.S. victory.

While in St. Andrews, the U.S. and Canadian Teams enjoyed the many attractions of the Home of Golf, including recreational rounds on The Old Course. Canadian, Austin Chase left his mark on Scotland after making a hole-in-one on the 8th Hole of The Old Course. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club hosted a tour for all WJGC participants which included a detailed lesson the history of the game by the Member's secretary and a tour through the Trophy Room overlooking the Old Course.

The U.S. and Canadian Teams were the culmination of regional qualifying tournaments in the respective countries.

David Stypula, Cranbrook, B.C. and Michael Dinner, Oakville, Ontario lost to Jay Morgan and Heather Angell, U.S., 6 and 4

Jonathon Lauzon, Repentiguy, Quebec and Ryan Roe, Vancouver, B.C. defeated Hunter Mahan and Ryan Marshall, U.S., 2 and 1

Adrian Deakin, Surrey, B.C. and Patrick Givelas, Don Mills, Ontario lost to Thomas Kulcak and Jesse Mueker, U.S., 2 and 1

Ryan Yip, Calgary, Alberta and Alain Robichaud, Kapuskasing, Ontario lost to Matthew Rosenfeld and J. J. Wood, U.S., 1 up

Tina Mabanta, West Vancouver, B.C. and Graydon Ham, North York lost to Brian Melvin and Jason Louth, 6 and 5.
