You proved my point Stoner. We're talking being Number 1 over all not being among the top 5. And you couldn't even name 2 teams that won the conference and the Stanley Cup in the same year during the last 10 years.
I would bet the farm that there have been more top 5 teams that jockeyed for a final position in the standings that would give them a preferred playoff opponent than blow their wad trying to get first place.
You name me the teams that said to themselves at the beginning of the year that they were shooting for number 1 overall. If you can find more than 2 out of 15 in each conference then you have a scoop. The other 26 teams goal was trying to make the playoffs.
Man... it's incredible the stuff you guys can come up with.

The point West was arguing is that just trying to get into the playoffs is a goal for losers. The good teams, the really good teams, the contenders, look beyond that. No one EVER said finishing #1 is the end all be all for these teams. You just made it up. These teams already have the built in confidence and arrogance that they will have a playoff spot ready for themselves, and their goal is to finish as high as they can, but not at any cost. If it turns out to be #1, great. But the playoffs is a fait accompli for them. A pre-determined destiny in their minds. Their goal is finish as high as they can, without burning up all their resources before the playoffs start. Finishing #1 is nice, but they all know that winning the division is the most important thing, or at least top 4, and getting some home playoff games to begin with.
Now go get my little puppet Ram to produce 5 SC cup winning teams in the last 20 years that finished outside the top 4-5 regular season spots.
And then get off the bong. You've really fried yourself this morning.

Again, you are beyond stupid. If you think teams like Philly, San Jose, Detroit, Washington, Calgary, Vancouver, Chicago, Pittsburgh, et al would be happy finishing in 15th or 16th spot this year, you have lost it.

For proof of that all you need to look it is how the local media covers teams like the Flames.
There is never any question about making the playoffs. Last night, they were going on about how Kipper has been playing a lot lately but with the coming schedule he will rest more so he stays at the 65 game mark for the season. That will ensure that he is "rested for the playoffs". No "ifs" in there. It's a given, this team will be in the playoffs.
The Flames goal is not to make the playoffs. Their goal is to win the Stanley Cup. Anything less will be considered a disapointment.
Making the playoffs? Probably a big deal about 8 years ago. Today? Not anywhere close to being the goal.

According to Bob, the leafs suck, the league sucks, everyones goal is the same, no games are exciting, this chatline sucks etc. etc. etc........
I've read that's the mood swings that eventually turn into depression if one takes drugs long enough.

Hey Stoogemeister, do you really think that Osgoode would've made a difference? The main reason why the Wings probably won't be in the Stanley Cup playoffs this year is because of goaltending. Furthermore, any goalie faces getting "undressed" by the likes of Datsyuk and Zetterberg as shooters.
It could have been a total shellacking by Detroit against MTL. The Habs got their first "loser" point, compared to how many by your "loser loofs"?...Oh yeah, it's 5 or 6 freebees!

What a joke..the habs lead the league in loser\gimmick points...if not for their victories in overtime and shootouts they'd be near the bottom of the standings....habs simply can't win real 5 on 5 hockey games...they are getting most of their points via ridiculous cheesey gimmicks like 4 on 4 and the shootouts...how many regulation wins do the habs have everhabs?? that tells you what kind of team they really are..
