Martha Adusei was not eligible to run for Canada at the 1999 Pan American
Games because she wasn't yet a Canadian citizen. As a landed immigrant
she was allowed to compete a few weeks later at the world championships and
helped Canada to an impressive sixth place finish in the 4X100 relay. She
passed her citizenship test this year and is now eligible for Sydney. Her
role on the relay is even more crucial with the absence of Canada's top
female sprinter Philomena Mensah. Adusei will also run the 100 in Sydney.
Adusei was one of six athletes from Ghana to defect to Canada during the
1994 Commonwealth Games. She has made remarkable progress in the 100 since
1996, improving her personal best from 12.02 to 11.29. She made her
international debut for Ghana at the 1993 African Games.
