Beth Calkin competes in the Europe class, a women's only event that was added to the Olympic program in 1992. The Europe dinghy is often referred as the small Finn because the two boats are similar in design.

Calkin qualified for her first Games in January 1999 by finishing eighth at the world championships. However a back injury suffered at those worlds has hampered her training ever since. She was forced to miss last year's Pan Am Games because of the injury.

She started sailing as a youngster following in her parents footsteps. She says Sydney Harbour is one of her favorite courses because a lot of tactics are involved which provides her with an advantage.
