  Gavin Hassett joined the lightweight national team in 1993 and won the gold medal that year in men's eights at the world championships. Then in 1996, he took silver in the lightweight fours at the Olympic Games. He'll compete in the same event at the 2000 Games.  

He started rowing in 1989 in high school. He competed at the Canada Games in 1991 and the World University Games in 1993.

Sept. 22: Men's lightweight fours: Iain Brambell, Victoria; Chris Davidson, Oakville, Ont.; Gavin Hassett, Victoria, and Jon Beare, Toronto, finished fourth in semifinal heat, eliminated. Sept. 18: Men's lightweight four: Chris Davidson, Oakville, Ont.; Jon Beare, Toronto; Iain Brambell, Brentwood Bay, B.C.; Gavin Hassett, Victoria, finished second to France in heat, advanced to semifinals.
