Michelle Fournier reached the Olympic standard in the women's hammer throw two weeks before the Olympic trials and qualified for the Games by placing second at the trials. It is the first time the women's hammer throw will be on the Olympic program. Fournier set a Canadian record in the hammer with her silver medal performance of 62.91 metres at the 1999 NCAA Championships -- the record has since been broken by Caroline Wittrin. She graduated in 1998 with a degree in marketing and finance from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina and is pursuing a career in sports marketing. Her brother Greg -- one of her biggest influences -- played in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
