Ian Millar has earned a number of trophies and medals in his storied career.

But one honour has remained elusive for the past 28 years -- an Olympic medal.

When Millar rides in Sydney, he'll set a Canadian record by participating in his seventh Olympic Games.

The string began in 1972 at the Munich Games and was broken only in 1980, when the government boycotted the Moscow Olympics.

Millar still remembers his first Olympics, which came aboard a horse named Shoeman in a main stadium filled to capacity in Munich.

"I remember (Shoeman's) reaction," said Millar, of Perth. "He looked around that big stadium and stopped dead in his tracks.

"I could feel his heart beating against my legs, and I thought, 'Oh, this isn't good. I'm riding Old Faithful here.' "

Millar is best known for his accomplishments with Big Ben, the family's beloved horse who died last December. He and Millar remain the only show jumping team to win back-to-back World Cup titles.

In Sydney, the 53-year-old Millar will ride Dorincord, a horse his son, Jonathon, discovered when he was competing in Europe.

For the Millars, show jumping is a family business.

Jonathon and his sister, Amy, ride competitively and aspire to compete at the Olympic Games themselves someday.

The elder Millar had hoped one, if not both, would be accompanying him to Sydney as a teammate, but that dream might have to wait until the 2004 Athens Games.

"I guess it depends on how bad I want it in four years," said Millar, who'll be 57 then, about whether he'll try for 2004. "I really enjoy it now because I'm still having fun, and I'll keep doing this as long as it's still fun."

Such an accomplishment would set modern Olympic history. It's believed no parent has ever competed on the same Olympic team with a son or daughter.

"People have mentioned, 'Can't wait until it's an all-Millar team.' We've brought it up and we think it's an amazing thing," said Amy.
