Canada did not qualify a team in men's gymnastics however it did qualify
two individual spots. Alexandre Jeltkov grabbed one of the positions as
expected but Kyle Shewfelt achieved a remarkable feat to earn his ticket to
Sydney.
With only four World Cup remaining, Shewfelt needed at least a top-eight on
floor at each stop to stand a chance at achieving the top-16 World Cup
ranking Olympic standard. He was brilliant to finish eighth overall in the
event's World Cup standings. His top performance was a bronze medal in
Scotland in which he registered the sixth highest score of the World Cup
season and the ninth best score over the past four years.
Shewfelt gained confidence early on he could achieve the Olympic
requirements.
"I was a bit intimidated at first," said Shewfelt, who trains five hours a
day and is completing his high school by correspondence. "But by the third
or fourth meet I realized that I belonged. I could compete at that level."
