Brunet wins kayak gold
DUISBURG, Germany (CP) -- World champion Caroline Brunet of Lac-Beauport, Que.,
won a gold medal in the women's K-1 500 metres yesterday at a World Cup canoe
and kayak competition.
It was the final major paddling meet before the Sydney Olympics. Canada had
three gold, three silver and three bronze.
Brunet, 31, won the race in one minute 51.771 seconds with Josefa Idem of
Italy second at 1:52.791 and Katrin Wagner of Germany third at 1:54.851.
Brunet has won six K-1 500 races in a row.
In the K-2 500, Brunet and Karen Furneaux of Waverley, N.S., were third in
1:49.361. Furneaux added a silver medal in the K-1 200, finishing in 42.201.
There are no 200-metre races at the Olympics.
Canada's women's Olympic K-4 crew of Marie-Josee Gibeau Ouimet of Lachine,
Que., Kamini Jain of Vancouver, Carrie Lightbound of Mississauga and Julia
Rivard of Halifax were third in the 200- and 500-metre races.
Germany and Spain were first and second in both.
