Golden day for Brunet

SZEGED, Hungary (CP) -- Triple world champion Caroline Brunet of Lac-Beauport, Que., won three golds and a bronze yesterday at the third stop on the World Cup paddling circuit.

Brunet was first in the K-1 500 metres, an event in which she won silver at Atlanta in 1996, clocking one minute and 59.655 seconds. Josefa Idem of Germany was second and Katrin Borchert of Australia was third

"This was probably the last meet before the Olympics that most the world's best are together and (Brunet) wanted to show her stuff," Canadian Canoe Association high-performance director Graham Barton said.

In her other Olympic-event race, Brunet was third with Karen Furneaux of Waverley, N.S., in the K-2 500. Brunet also grabbed golds in the K-1 200 and the K-2 200 with Furneaux.
