Sydney opener certain to have Australian flavour

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Olivia Newton-John will headline an Aussie cast for next month's opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics.

Newton-John will perform with John Farnham, who gained international fame in the 1960s with pop hit "Sadie the Cleaning Lady," and was briefly lead singer of the Little River Band. Also performing will be Julie Anthony, Tina Arena, and bush balladeer John Williamson, who'll sing Australian classic "Waltzing Matilda".

Director of ceremonies Ric Birch, who unveiled the cast Wednesday, said the Sept. 15 opening ceremony had presented him with his most complicated and most technically complex task.

Birch orchestrated the opener at Barcelona in 1992.
