Russian ends Bosshart's fight for the gold
By DAVE FULLER -- Toronto Sun
SYDNEY -- Winnipeg's Dominique Bosshart fought the law and the law lost.
But four hours later, a Russian streetfighter named Natalia Ivanova put the collar on Canada's lone competitor in Taekwondo, defeating the University of Manitoba student 8-6 last night.
The loss ended Bosshart's hopes for gold in the over-67 kg weight class, although at press time there still was a chance the 22-year-old could use the repechage to advance to the bronze medal final.
After scoring a 5-4 buzzer-beater victory over Veera Liukkonen, a policewoman from Espoo, Finland, in her first bout, Bosshart allowed Ivanova to open up a 3-0 lead less than a minute into their bout.
Bosshart rallied to even the score 4-4, fell behind again but then decked her opponent for a 5-5 draw.
But Ivanova regained a 7-6 lead entering the third round and the closest Bosshart came to scoring was a mule kick which glanced off the back of her opponent's head.
Ivanova, 29, is 3-0 against Bosshart since they first faced each other in 1997.
"The other fights I had with her she moved away very well," Bosshart said. "Maybe it was because I only did one kick at that time and didn't follow up."
Bosshart appeared in danger of losing her first match, rallying from a similar 3-0 deficit to outpoint Liukkonen 5-4.
Bosshart kicked her opponent in the face at the buzzer to clinch the victory.
