State Sports Centre

The State Sports Centre, built on the site of the old Abattoir saleyards, was opened in 1984. It is a multi-purpose venue for elite and amateur training and competition for up to 26 sports including basketball, fencing, volleyball, judo, wrestling and rhythmic gymnastics, During the Games, the State Sports Centre will be used for table tennis and taekwondo.

The Sports Centre's main arena has seating for 5,000 spectators and is ideally suited to stage a variety of commercial activities, from concerts to exhibitions and trade shows.

The State Sports Centre complex also contains the State Hockey Centre, State Softball Centre and a golf driving range along with grass playing fields which can be used for staging outdoor events.

The Centre also has weight training rooms and a sports medicine centre as well as lecture and function rooms for conferences, meetings, dinners and cocktail parties. The Hall of Champions at the Centre is a permanent exhibition paying tribute to those sporting men and women who have achieved national and international prominence. The hall includes a display of rare sporting memorabilia from the late 1880's to the present day.
