Lajunen wins third Nordic combined gold
 MIDWAY, Utah (AP) -- As much as he'd rather avoid the subject, Samppa Lajunen's run toward Olympic gold began last April, when the great Bjarte Engen Vik of Norway suddenly announced his retirement.

 With Vik out of the picture, there was no one to stop Lajunen from running the table at the Salt Lake City Games.

Finn leads final Nordic combined event
 PARK CITY, Utah (AP) -- Finland's Samppa Lajunen, going for his third Nordic combined gold medal of the Winter Games, was the leader after Thursday's jumping portion of the sprint competition on the big hill at Olympic Park.
 With each jumper going just once on the K120 hill, Lajunen leaped 415 feet (126.5 meters), the longest of the day. With the judges' style points averaged in, he scored 123.8 points.

U.S. team tries to leave on high note
 PARK CITY, Utah (AP) -- There is no pressure for the U.S. Nordic combined team: It already has exceeded expectations, which weren't high to begin with.
 The U.S. team entered the Olympics never having won a medal in this sport. The Americans still don't have one, but they came close: They finished fourth in the team competition, and Lodwick finished seventh in the individual event.
