Isabelle Charest, a member of the 1994 and 1998 medal winning Olympic relay teams, made a successful return to competition at the Olympic short track speed skating trials in November earning a berth on the team and qualifying to race the her best event, the 500-metres at the Games.

A national team member since 1988, Charest took a sabbatical last season and enjoyed the break.

"To be away from the sport for a year really helps you appreciate what a great life it is to be an athlete," said Charest, who married Steve Charbonneau of the Montreal Alouettes this past summer. "It's wonderful to be able to go out and train everyday.

"But being away gives you the urge to comeback. Returning to the level that I once was has been tough. Especially that the quality of women's skating has greatly increased."

Charest held the world record in the women's 500 from 1996 to 1999 and was the first woman to go under 45 seconds. At the 1996 world championships she won gold in the 500, silver in the 1,000 and was third overall. She clocked the fastest time at the 1998 Olympics but fell in the final and placed fourth.
