Catriona Le May Doan enters the 2002 Winter Olympics as Canada's top gold medal hope in an individual sport. The hero of the 1998 Nagano team, Le May Doan was dominant in the 500-metres last season. She earned the World Cup title winning nine of 10 races, the world championship crown and broke the world record twice in the event.

It now stands at a staggering 37.29 seconds with the new standard set at the world championships in Salt Lake City.

"I never broke under pressure during the entire season," recalled Le May Doan, the defending Olympic champion in the 500 and bronze medallist in the 1,000. She was the first Canadian long track speed skating multi-medallist since Gaetan Boucher in 1984. "I was consistent and for me that's an accomplishment. It's harder to do that than have a good race here and there."

She also finished the season on a strong note in the 1,000 with a bronze medal at the worlds.

"The 1,000 is a harder race for me," said, the born-again Christian. "But I've proven to myself that I'm competitive with the other women. You have to go for it from the start because the ice will carry you even when you die at the end."

She was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame last May.

Le May Doan started speed skating at age nine following in the footsteps of her older sister. She was also an excellent all around athlete and competed in track and field at the 1993 Canada Games.
