GREATER DEPRESSION
Earl Simmons, a.k.a. DMX, has returned from a short stint as an actor and is set to release his fourth album in late September. X, himself a manic-depressive, has titled his new LP The Great Depression.

Also known as bipolar disorder, manic-depression is a very serious mental illness affecting thousands of Canadians. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health estimates that at any one time, approximately three million Canadians have a serious form of depression, yet only a third of those seek help.

Manic-depression normally starts in young adult life, but can begin in the teenage years. Teenagers with manic-depression suffer from an ongoing and alternating set of highs and lows. Children with bipolar parents or who have a family history of drug and alcohol abuse are particularly susceptible to manic-depression.

Effective treatment is available for teenagers with manic-depression--including education, mood-stabilizing medications and psychotherapy--but recognizing bipolar tendencies takes time. Some symptoms of manic behaviour include: severe mood changes; unrealistic highs in self-esteem--feeling like a super-hero, for example; sudden increases in energy and the ability to go without sleep; talkativeness; openness to distraction; repeated high-risk behaviour -- such as sexual promiscuity, excessive drug and alcohol use, denial.

Depressive behaviour can include: irritability, feelings of guilt and persistent sadness; thoughts of death or suicide; loss of enjoyment in favorite activities; frequent complaints of physical illness; low energy levels, fatigue, boredom and poor concentration; major changes in eating or sleeping patterns, such as oversleeping or overeating.

Just because you or someone you know displays some or all of these symptoms, it doesn't necessarily mean they suffer from manic-depression, as these symptoms are also related to other psychological disorders. In any case, it's a good idea to seek professional help -- just for peace of mind's sake.

Treatment can help an individual with depression or manic-depression rebuild self-esteem, adapt to stress and improve their personal relationships. Don't wait. If you or someone you know shows signs of depression or manic-depression, consult your family doctor, a psychiatrist or your school's guidance counsellor. MILL OF RUMOURS

Since appearing on fuel's august cover, mariah carey's been the focus of a torrent of rumours as fans anxiously await her new album. here's a few ditties making the rounds--believe 'em or not:
  • As Mariah bragged to Allure magazine about the diamond bracelet she received from boyfriend Luis Miguel, rumours of her involvement with Eminem continued to circulate. Mariah was spotted with Marshall several times, including once when she brought the king of controversy home to 'show him the 'Loverboy' video.'
  • E! Online reported that Mariah fought with Mira Sorvino, her co-star in a new movie being filmed in Nova Scotia, Wise Girls. A representative for Sorvino said that Mariah was not aiming at Mira when she threw a saltshaker in Sorvino's direction.
  • The Daily Star reported a direct connection between Mariah's health problems and her cover of the hit song 'Without You.' The writers of the song -- Peter Ham and Tom Evans of the group Badfinger -- both killed themselves.
  • When asked about his relationship with Mariah, Fuel Editor Chris Pearce responded, "She wouldn't stop calling; I had to change my phone number. Three or four e-mails an hour -- by the end, it was just scary. Who could've guessed she'd be a bugaboo? I still have love for her though, still."

  • A DOZEN PLUS GET DIRTY
D12 were kicked off the warped tour in early august after a brawl broke out following a show in new jersey. 40 D12 associates attacked fellow detroit rapper Esham, leaving him with a broken nose, concussion, hearing damage and a ruptured eyeball.

D12 were upset about Esham's new album, Tongues, and the track 'Chemical Imbalance,' which disses both Eminem and M's daughter: "They won't let me on MTV, I'd beat up Carson Daly / And remind Eminem of D'Angelo Bailey / Haley's in a coma, Haley's in a coma / I smell the aroma, of a dead body."

On the track 'All Night Everyday,' Esham also takes a not-so-subtle shot at D12 with the lines: "The styles that you runnin' 'round wit' is ours / You and them Shady suckas is nothin' but cowards... I'm the E to the S to the H-A-M / If I wasn't, then why would I say I am?"

Although Eminem wasn't physically involved in the attack, Esham believes M orchestrated the beat-down. In an interview with Billboard, Esham stated: "Mathers gave the word... This was a straight up attempted murder on my life. I could have been dead."
