Britney 'taking a break' from music

Pop princess Britney Spears will be coming down from her throne for a while.

The BBC reports the 21-year-old will be taking a three-month break before beginning work on her next film, and will be away from music for the forseeable future.

"She has been touring non-stop and she understandably needs to take a break," Spears's spokeswoman told the BBC.

The spokeswoman denied speculation that Spears will be taking a two-year break from the music world due to exhaustion.

Personal turmoil has flanked Spears of late. She recently broke up with her boyfriend and *NSync star Justin Timberlake, and her parents separated.

Her behaviour has also come into question lately, as she was spotted giving "the finger" to Mexican photographers while on tour there. She also didn't endear herself to fans when she walked off the stage in the middle of a show that same day following a thunderstorm.

    Britney dishes on "Austin Powers"

Britney Spears is giving her fans the scoop on the upcoming "Austin Powers 3" cameo.

Britney will star as herself in the film. In that alternate universe, the pop princess is dating Mini Me (Verne Troyer), zap2it.com reports.

One of Britney's "Austin" scenes finds her battling with Austin Powers (Mike Myers) for the spotlight during one of her concerts.

The movie, which also stars Destiny's Child's Beyonce Knowles as Foxy Cleopatra, is scheduled to open on July 26.

    Britney track is import only

Britney Spears could have gone in a different direction than the "girl not yet a woman" road with her latest album "Britney".

An import-only track titled "Before The Goodbye" by producer BT didn't make the album's final cut, EW.com reports. The song has popped up as a bonus track on some import copies of "Britney" and is widely available online.

"Before" finds Britney stuttering short, snappy lines over quick synthesized beats, and sounds just a little more electronic and dancey than her usual numbers. BT, however, said it and another track he did with her called "When I Say So," didn't fit in with the rest of the songs on "Britney".

"[My songs were] too different from what the rest of the record was like," BT told EW.com. "The record ended up with very sort of Neptunes-y, R&B-type slant on it. And the stuff that we did was dance music. The stuff didn't make sense for the American version of the record -- they put it on everything else."

    Britney denies split with Justin

Britney Spears says she and Justin Timberlake haven't split.

Rumours of a Britney/Justin split popped up over the weekend and yesterday but the singer herself says they're completely false, MTV reports.

"No, that's not true," she told MTV Italy. "Me and Justin did not split up."

Tabloids and gossip columnists are refusing to give up the story though. The New York Post's Pagesix.com claims that a "spy" of theirs saw Justin dancing, or "bumping and grinding", (according to Page Six) at a trendy spot in Hollywood with a "dark curly-haired beauty".

    Are Britney and Justin splitting?

There's a brand new Britney Spears/Justin Timberlake rumour hitting newspapers, websites, and radio stations right about now but it might be too juicy to be true.

Should you believe the story that Britney and her *Nsync boyfriend have broken up? It might be fun to gossip about, but chances are it isn't true. The London Sun, which has a track record of incorrect information, says the couple broke up because Justin was tired of their busy schedules and with the fact that he didn't get to see her often.

A representative from Jive/Zomba in Canada, Britney's record label, said there was no statement or comment on the story from the label. But according to the BBC in the U.K., one of her spokespeople said that the star told reporters at a German press conference that she and Justin hardly ever get to see one another because of "work commitments" and the story gained momentum and changed form after that comment.

A simple trip to Britney's official website, britneyspears.com, also throws doubt onto the break-up rumour. The supposed split happened last week (according to the London Sun), but Britney's mom Lynne posted a message on her daughter's official website on March 6 that said the two were together at the Grammys.

"Britney attended the Grammys with Justin," she writes. "Justin and Britney went to some of the parties after the ceremony."

According to the London Sun, these are some of the signs that point to a Britney/Justin break-up:

  • Britney has supposedly taken off a friendship ring Justin gave her
  • Britney was seen crying at Les Deux Cafe in Hollywood with actress Tara Reid ("American Pie", wait a minute - have those two ever been seen together and are they even friends?) and reportedly told the actress the romance was over.

Britney and Justin first met while they were on "The Mickey Mouse Club" television show together in the mid-Nineties and have been dating for two years.

In more Britney news, the singer's new video tells fans and critics that the star is going to do what she wants.

Fans desperate to know more about the Britney/Justin rumour will have to wait for it to find out whether the couple have split or not.

Britney's new video is for the remix of "Overprotected" and in L.A. recently, MTV reports.

The video continues on with the singer/actresses' plan to shed her youthful image and assert control over her career. (Examples of the ongoing theme include her single "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman" and her snake-charming performance of "Slave 4 U" at the MTV Video awards.)

The video's director, Chris Applebaum, said Britney came up with the video's concept herself -- to find the star and five friends sneaking past her bodyguard and making it to a dance club.

Other elements of the video include footage of Britney and her pals in a hotel room while a reporter on the television frowns at Britney's sexy image which inspires the girls to sneak out to the club.

Britney's sister gears up for fame

Britney's little sister, Jamie Lynn, is eager to follow in the diva's footsteps.

Britney got her start as a youngster on television's "The Mickey Mouse Club", and now it sounds as though Jamie Lynn (born in 1990) is moving in the same direction, according to a message on Britney's official website from her mother Lynne.

"Jamie Lynn and I flew to Los Angeles to visit Britney, and to meet with a network," Lynne writes. "The network called last week about Jamie Lynn doing some work in television. Jamie Lynn is ecstatic. Britney and I are too, but we want a situation where she can still be a kid and have fun. Jamie Lynn also has to keep her grades up if she plans to start the entertainment business."

In more Britney-related news, Lynne also wrote that the singer/actress is already planning her next film project. Britney, who can currently be seen on the big screen in "Crossroads", is busy reading scripts.

"There is one we especially love," writes Lynne. "I read the book a couple of years ago. The part seems to be perfect for her. She knows she will get the part if it's meant to be. Personally, I also think Brit could do a romantic comedy."

Britney not guesting on 'Sex And The City'

The HBO network says Britney won't be making an appearance on "Sex And The City" after all.

The story, which was originally reported by the New York Post, claimed that Britney would be playing the wild niece of Samantha who is played by Kim Cattrall. Kim plays Britney's mom in the singer's movie "Crossroads".

An HBO representative told TV Guide that the whole story is "not true".

In more Britney news, a recent survey conducted over the past year says women want Britney's body.

The survey involved 1500 female patients of Dr. Richard Flemin, who is the co-director of the Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery, zap2it.com reports.

The results also showed that the patients wanted Halle Berry's cheeks, Heather Graham's eyes, Heather Locklear's nose and Denise Richard's lips.

Britney to guest on 'Sex And The City' ?
Britney Spears' movie mom reportedly snagged the singer a gig on HBO's popular comedy "Sex And The City".

"Sex" star Kim Cattrall plays Britney's mother in the new movie "Crossroads", and the two actors will team up again on the racy TV comedy, Pagesix.com reports.

Britney has signed on to play Samantha's (Kim's character) sex-obsessed niece, who manages to seduce her aunt's love interest.

"Samantha thinks her niece is a virgin, but nothing could be further from the truth," a show insider told Pagesix.com.

Although the series is semi-famous for showing the program's stars in the nude, Britney isn't expected to lose her clothing for the guest appearance.

Britney & Justin design for charity

Britney and Justin have designed special T-shirts for charity.

Proceeds from the shirt sales are going to the Britney Spears Foundation and the Justin Timberlake Foundation, MuchMusic reports.

The design on Britney's shirt was reportedly inspired by the emotions the singer experienced after Sept. 11, while Justin's is based on the tattoo of a gold cross that can be found on his upper left arm.

Fans can purchase the shirts at Planet Hollywoods in the U.S., London, and Paris.

"I am so thrilled to be able to raise funds for my Foundation with the sale of the shirts," said Britney. "The designs came straight from my heart, and I hope all my fans will support the Foundation and its many worthy programs by buying the shirt."

Pop queen hits the silver screen

By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun

NEW ORLEANS -- Make no mistake about it. Pursuing an acting career is vitally important to Britney Spears.

The 20-year-old pop music queen, who makes her debut in the coming-of-age road movie Crossroads -- in theatres Friday -- seems surprised anyone would question her commitment.

In a 1-on-1 exclusive Toronto print media interview with The Sun this past week, Spears discussed just how near and dear it is to her young heart the prospect of making a successful crossover from singer to actress.

"It's something I definitely want to do in the future. Oh, my goodness, yeah," says Spears, looking ever the immaculate blond vision in a lacy cream top, lavender pants and cream boots while seated in an elegant hotel room as Mardi Gras celebrations get under way outside.

"I don't think it's easy. It wasn't easy for me. The whole transition was a little scary at first, but I'm so happy I did it. I'm very, very happy with the movie, so we'll see what happens. I'll be curious to see." Not helping matters is that both Mariah Carey and NSYNC's Lance Bass recently bombed in their film debuts, but Spears said their failures didn't make her any more nervous about her chances.

"I'm ambitious and I like to challenge myself and I like to push myself and so it made me want to really go there just to see if I could do it. Just to see. But it's not even so much about it being the biggest movie in the world. As long as my fans can go to it and be touched by it in its own way."

In Crossroads, Spears plays Lucy, a goody-two-shoes valedictorian who winds up losing her virginity to the ruggedly handsome Ben (Anson Mount) during a road trip to Los Angeles in his 1973 Buick convertible. Also along for the ride are Lucy's two childhood friends played by Taryn Manning (Crazy/Beautiful) and Zoe Saldana (Center Stage, Get Over).

It's an adolescent girl's fantasy come true, and yet the movie is rated PG-13 for "sexual content and brief teen drinking," so it might not be appropriate for all of Spears' legion of young female fans.

"I think that it's up to the parent to decide," Spears says. "And my sister's 10 years old and she went to go see the movie and she loved it."

Still, Spears -- who, like it or not, is a role model to an entire generation -- also sports some pretty sexy getups in the film.

The opening scene features her in just a tank top and underwear lip-synching to Madonna's Open Your Heart in her bedroom. That is followed by an even hotter scene in which she emerges from a bathroom in a black blazer with just a pink lace bra and panties underneath as she prepares to sleep with her high school lab partner (Justin Long) before they both realize it would be a mistake.

"Well, I can't be wearing a bathrobe when I'm about to make love to someone, so you kind of have to go with the character and see what Lucy would wear," she says. "All of those were my decisions (as to) what I felt she'd wear."

For the record, there are no sex scenes in Crossroads. When Lucy decides to go all the way with Ben, all you see is a long kiss before they both take off their shirts (she has a camisole underneath). Then the camera pans to a setting sun.

Spears, who once loudly proclaimed that she wanted to remain a virgin until she got married, says Lucy's decision was already in the script courtesy of screenwriter Shonda Rhimes (Introducing Dorothy Dandridge).

"Actually, the writer came up with that. It was in the script. It totally fit. I thought it was necessary for the character. I thought it made sense."

Spears -- who is dating fellow pop star Justin Timberlake of NSYNC -- appeared last weekend on Saturday Night Live as host and performer and wasted no time making fun of the "virginity issue" in the TV show's opening monologue.

"The whole monologue was my idea with me and Chris Kattan, him dressed up like me," she says. "But all the wording and stuff was their idea. I loved it. I thought it was brilliant. Before, they had something that I really didn't like."

The script was rewritten to her satisfaction.

Spears says "hopefully" people will move on from the all-consuming question of "is she or isn't she still a virgin?" For the record, she refuses to discuss the matter with reporters.

Crossroads also features three of Spears' songs -- I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman, Overprotected, and I Love Rock 'N' Roll from her latest album, Britney. That's why there won't be a soundtrack CD for this movie. Heaven forbid that anything competes with her third record, released last November. Her first album, 1999's ... Baby One More Time, sold 21 million copies and her 2000 followup, Oops! ... I Did It Again, sold 17 million.

"Most of the cool songs are on my album and it really wouldn't make sense to have a soundtrack," she says.

Spears, a native of Kentwood, La., saw Crossroads for the first time last Tuesday night with an audience in a New Orleans theatre.

The screening, which she attended with her entire family including 10-year-old sister Jamie Lynn (who has a brief role in the film as a younger version of Lucy), was accompanied by major hoopla. There were searchlights outside the theatre, a phalanx of photographers and reporters, celebrity guests including the band No Doubt, and even a red carpet.

The official premiere takes place tomorrow night in L.A. Spears will appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Tuesday night.

"I was so nervous at first," she says, "because I was there with my friends and my family and everybody, but once the movie started going along and once everyone started really getting into it and they were laughing at stuff, it made me feel better."

    What about her perfectionist tendencies?

"There were certain scenes where I was like, 'Oh, Britney. Why did you look that way?' But I kind of got lost in the character and was just feeling sorry for Lucy. I really saw it like that."

Without revealing too much, Lucy -- who is being raised by a single dad (Dan Aykroyd) -- goes in search of her mother (Kim Cattrall) during the road trip.

And even if Spears' movie doesn't succeed, there could be another actress in her family.

"You know what? I definitely think Jamie Lynn's going to do something," Spears says. "I don't know what it is, but the girl's going to do something. She has a mind of her own. She knows what she wants and she's a performer. She's already, every night, in the bathtub ... singing and dancing. Mama has to tell her to get out of the tub.

"She's going to take the world by storm."

    Kind of like someone else.

Spears already has another film project in the works -- "a dramedy" was all she would say, but it's not a done deal.

Her favourite actresses? Goldie Hawn and Julia Roberts.

Her wish-list for male co-stars is predictable: "Listen to me. I'm like, 'Brad Pitt. George Clooney. Tom Cruise.' "

    Then there's Robert De Niro.

Mount was in the middle of making City By The Sea, with De Niro in New York, when he was asked to audition for Crossroads.

Apparently, De Niro read lines with Mount, with De Niro reading Britney's.

"Anson told me about that," Spears says. "It's bizarre. It's completely bizarre. I was like, 'What? ... Okay.' "

    POP GIRLS ON FILM
Britney follows in the footsteps of some notable singers

    MADONNA
Track Record: Like A Virgin (1984), True Blue (1986) and bushels more hit records.

Big Screen Debut: Desperately Seeking Susan (1985). Basically played herself as she was incarnated back then -- a sexy, unstable hedonist in skimpy clothes. Come to think of it, that pretty much still applies today.

Action! Call Desperately virgin's luck. Madonna went on to star in the painfully unfunny Shanghai Surprise and Who's That Girl before plunging into sexploitation (Body Of Evidence), indie flicks (Four Rooms) and a big-budget musical (Evita). Despite a host of other misfires, she gives it another shot with the upcoming Love, Sex & Drugs, directed by hubby Guy Ritchie.

    CYNDI LAUPER
Track Record: She's So Unusual (1984), True Colors (1986) and a bunch of other albums you don't remember.

Big Screen Debut: Vibes (1988). What a stretch -- Lauper plays an oddball in her "comedy" debut. She and Jeff Goldblum are psychics who search for a magical lost city in the mountains of Ecuador. It's as good as it sounds.

Cut! The girl just wants to make movies -- but should we let her? Lauper went on to star in such fondly remembered classics as Off And Running, Life With Mikey and The Opportunists. Sadly, her film career is still more productive than her musical one -- but she could always fall back to managing beloved pro wrestler Captain Lou Albano.

    SUSANNA HOFFS
Track Record: With girl group The Bangles, recorded All Over The Place (1984), Different Light (1986) and Everything (1988). Solo credits include When You're A Boy (1991) and Susanna Hoffs (1996).

Big Screen Debut: The Allnighter (1988). The sloe-eyed Hoffs plays a fun-loving co-ed who looks for Mr. Right in a comedy written and directed by her mom (below right). Was mama Hoffs the one who put Susanna in that skimpy bikini? Actually, we really don't want to know.

Cut! Susanna who? Exactly. Has walked like an Egyptian right out of the limelight for years now.

    JEWEL
Track Record: Pieces Of You (1995), A Night Without Armor (1998), Joy: A Holiday Selection (1998), This Way (2001).

Big Screen Splash: Ride With The Devil (1999). She plays Sue Lee, a winsome country girl who falls in love with vittles-lovin' cowboy Tobey Maguire.

Action! Mammary mia! Jewel's decent performance is overshadowed by the gratuitous performance of her, er, jewels, as she breastfeeds a baby in front of a salivating Maguire. She hasn't appeared in other flicks, though she says she'd love to do a comedy. Considering the comedic resumes of the previous artists, here's some advice: For the love of God, don't.

MARIAH CAREY BR>Track Record: Her musical career has gone from the giddy highs of her debut Mariah Carey (1990) to the Stygian abyss of her Glitter soundtrack (2001).

Big Screen Splash: Glitter (2001). Your Best Film Oscar winner right here.

Cut! Shortly before the movie's release, Carey went bonkers and was placed under psychiatric care for an emotional and physical breakdown -- which is a walk in the park compared to what happened to the people who saw Glitter.

    Britney's commercial falls flat

Despite all the hype surrounding Britney's latest "Pepsi" commercial, the upbeat, decade-jumping ad left Super Bowl fans unimpressed.

Britney's 90-second spot was the third lowest-rated ad in Ad Meter's list of 52 Super Bowl commercials, TV Guide reports.

Super Bowl viewers apparently preferred Bud Light ads.

In more Britney news, the release date of her new movie "Crossroads" is quickly approaching (Feb. 15) and just in case her fans have forgotten, she's popped up on TV with appearances and performances on "Saturday Night Live" and "Oprah".

But, just because the pop singer's music is light and catchy, doesn't mean her movie is full of fluff. "Crossroads" deals with some weighty issues, such as teen pregnancy but, as she told Rolling Stone, Britney thinks themes like that are important.

"I think as much as we want to try to cover up things like that, that's real," she told the magazine. "And I think it's important . . . kids see that and they don't feel alone in that."

Britney went on to say that although making the movie was "one of the most exciting things I've done in a while," she has no plans to quit her gig as a singer. She also said that if she and her boyfriend Justin Timberlake were to make a movie, she'd love it to be a remake of "Love Story".

Britney does decades in new Pepsi ad

Britney Spears' brand new Pepsi ads will feature the star as a floaty flower child, a beach-blanket babe, and an '80s star.

The new ads will air this Sunday during the Super Bowl. They'll feature Britney singing Pepsi songs from the past and the present, MTV reports.

The 90-second commercial includes elements of five different decades, from "Doo Wop" to the "New Millennium" (as described by the Pepsi website). It will debut during the second ad break of the first quarter of the football game on Feb. 3.

Beginning yesterday (Monday, Jan. 28), fans of Britney and the ads can vote on one of Britney's favourite 30-second clips from the 90 minute commercial -- "Doo Wop," "Surf's Up" and "New Millennium" -- to appear during the second quarter of the game. Voting wraps up at midnight on Friday, Feb. 1.

The Super Bowl ads are reportedly the most expensive on American television and cost more than $88 thousand U.S. per second, according to MuchMusic.

    Britney's famous juice glass

Britney Spears fans in Germany were clamouring for a glimpse of the pop star's juice glass this month.

Britney drank orange juice from a glass during an interview with a German radio station on Jan. 15 and now the glass has made its way to five cities, MuchMusic reports.

The glass's whirlwind tour finished up last week, and now the radio station will choose one Britney fan to drink the rest of the orange juice from the bottle Britney didn't finish during the interview.

In more Britney news, the latest rumour surrounding the singer is that Elton John wants to play the part of her father.

According to her official website, the rumour is that Elton wants to continue the story he started in his latest video for the song "This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore".

That video shows Justin Timberlake dressed as a young Elton, making his way through fans and celebrities backstage. The next video would continue with that night but from a fan's perspective.

"If we do it, my personal favorite would be Britney Spears," Elton reportedly said. "I want to play her dad in the video. That would be incredible. It'll be along the lines of -- I won't let her out and she wants to go to the concert and she runs away."

In even more Britney news, the superstar will be hosting and performing on "Saturday Night Live" this Saturday (Feb. 2).

Britney reportedly slammed into a bathroom and remained silent for a while after seeing the clip. When she and Justin finally discussed her reaction to "Gone", they decided that it would be better if she simply avoided videos that upset her.

The new version of Michael's concert will be two hours long.

    Britney poses for PETA

Britney Spears is making amends with PETA by posing for the animal-rights group's ads.

The flesh-baring posters are expected to debut by Christmas, and Britney will also be modelling faux-leather clothes on PETA's pleather-promoting website pleatheryourself.com, The New York Post reports.

Britney's teaming with PETA means the group is no longer furious with the pop star over her use of live animals (snakes and a caged tiger) during her notorious MTV Video Awards performance.

When news of Britney's MTV performance hit PETA offices, the group's spokesman, Dan Mathews, immediately sent a letter to the pop diva asking her to think about "the plight of captive wild animals caged and forced to tolerate bright lights, crowds, and frightening levels of noise," before putting animals in her show.

Although Britney's show did initially go on with the animals, the singer must have taken some of Mathews' advice to heart.

"A few weeks after we wrote her, we were sent a letter saying Britney had abandoned using animals on tour," Mathews told The Post.

In more Britney news, her mother Lynne says the pop princess had a great birthday this month at a small restaurant in New York, according to Lynne's message on Britney's official website.

Although boyfriend Justin Timberlake couldn't attend the celebrations, Lynne says the couple are very much together.

"Brit received so many beautiful gifts, especially the ones from Justin," she writes. "Justin called three times during the three-hour party. He was in rehearsals for the Billboard Awards and couldn't be there."

    Britney turns 20

Britney Spears had a racy 20th birthday party.

The pop princess celebrated her special day with her parents, some friends, little sister Jamie Lynn -- and a male stripper, The New York Post reports.

Britney and company celebrated the big day at an Italian restaurant in Englewood, N.J., after her Sunday night show at the Continental Airlines Arena.

"Britney was blushing and had a big smile on her face the whole time," Steven Peters (the stripper) told The Post. "She told me, 'This is the best birthday present I've ever gotten'!"

Britney's boyfriend Justin reportedly wasn't in attendance, but 11 of her presents were said to have come from him.

"She talked to Justin on the phone while she was unwrapping his presents," said restaurant owner Michel Bittan. "He gave her some beautiful Baccarat crystal glasses, a baby-blue teddy bear, and some silver candelabras."

A photo montage on Britney's official website shows snaps of the teen queen when she was a young girl, all dressed up for various pageants and "Musketeer" duties. The photo slides go on to show pictures of Britney's birthday bash, including the singer opening presents in front of her little sister (who looks exactly like a young Britney). The final shot is of Britney's elaborate 20th birthday cake, which came complete with blue flowers and a Cinderella style mini-carriage (which would make sense since Britney does have a song titled "Cinderella" on her new album).

    Britney plans more movies

Britney Spears has completely conquered the music market and now she's moving on to films with her star turn in the upcoming "Crossroads" and a cameo in another feature in the works.

Britney's debut starring role in a feature film will be in "Crossroads" due for release on Feb. 15, and despite the box office bomb that was Mariah Carey's "Glitter", Britney is already planning a second feature.

Variety reports that Britney has established a production company and is in negotiations with James V. Hart, the "Contact" screenwriter, to write a film especially for her.

In addition to the features, Britney will make a cameo appearance in Mike Myers' latest "Austin Powers" movie, titled "Goldmember".

And Miramax's head honcho, Harvey Weinstein, hopes to tap her talents for his latest project, zap2it.com reports.

Weinstein reportedly wants to cast Britney in a small part in the film adaptation of the musical "Chicago", which already stars Renee Zellweger, R&B singer Mya, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, all of whom are rehearsing now in Toronto.

According to Justin Long, who has a role in Britney's movie "Crossroads", Britney may be making a wise choice in focusing on a film career.

"I think she's going to surprise a lot of people with her acting ability," Justin, who appears on "Ed", told TV Guide Online. "I was certainly surprised."

    Will Britney marry Justin?

Brace yourself for the latest Britney Spears rumour.

Internet sites claim the famous pop diva is planning to wed her *Nsync star boyfriend Justin Timberlake on Valentine's Day (Feb. 14, 2002), MuchMusic reports.

Britney and Justin are living together and some online sites claim that Britney and Justin got engaged in August.

Fuelling speculation about possible upcoming nuptials is this quote from Britney, which made its way around the web earlier this year: "I love Justin and want to spend the rest of my life with him. I want to grow old with him. I couldn't have asked for a kinder and lovelier boyfriend".

Past rumours involving Britney and Justin have included their supposed death in a car accident.

    Britney in 'Austin Powers'

Britney Spears will grace the big screen in a cameo appearance for comedian Mike Myers.

The pop princess has agreed to play herself in "Austin Powers Goldmember". Famous producer Quincy Jones will also make a cameo, dotmusic reports.

Britney won't be the only young music diva appearing in the comedy. Destiny's Child star Beyoncé Knowles has a role in the film as Foxy Cleopatra.

Both Seth Green and Heather Graham will be reprising their roles from the previous "Austin" flick in the latest instalment.

In more Britney news, the pop diva's live concert special on HBO, "Britney Spears: Live In Las Vegas!", isn't expected to break any ratings records.

Five million people watched the show, which aired on Sunday night (Nov. 18) That isn't thought to be enough to make it HBO's most successful special.

'Britney', debuts at top of charts
    By PAUL CANTIN
    Senior Reporter, JAM! Showbiz

It was a cross-generational battle for first-place on the Canadian album charts this week, with youthful Britney Spears besting vets Pink Floyd.

Spears' new album, "Britney," entered SoundScan's Canadian charts at #1 on sales of 44,550 copies, well ahead of the second-place debut by Pink Floyd's "Echoes: The Best Of Pink Floyd" (28,894), although it should be pointed out that the latter is a two-disc set.

Spears success will come as a surprise to participants in JAM! Music's weekly Chart Battle, which asked readers which album would place higher this week. Pink Floyd was favoured by 73% of respondents, while only 27% gave the edge to Spears.

Last week's #2 debut, Enrique Iglesias's "Escape", was pushed down to third (28,645), while last week's #1 debut, "The Hits -- Chapter One" by Backstreet Boys, dipped to fourth on sales of 20,598.

Enya's "A Day Without Rain" (17,197) spent its 51st week by climbing from sixth to fifth place, while the "Now! 6" hits collection (15,889) dropped one place to sixth.

Nickelback's "Silver Side Up" (14,232) held fast at seventh, while Michael Jackson's "Invincible" (11,976) tumbled from third to eighth. Diana Krall's "The Look Of Love" (11,159) fell one place to ninth. The Dr. Dre/Snoop Dogg soundtrack "The Wash" (10,297) debuted at 10th.

In the U.S., the chart complexion was much the same: Spears led the way with 745,744 copies sold, followed by Floyd's 214,650. Iglesias, however, placed fourth with 182,950 sold, held out of third place by last week's U.S. #1 debut -- Michael Jackson's "Invincible," which sold 202,341 and continues to proportionately out-perform the album's Canadian sales, based on the industry-standard 10 to 1 sales differential between the U.S. and Canada.

Anyone looking for signs of the "Harry Potter" hurricane hitting ahead of the film's Friday opening should consider this: Before the majority of the public has seen a single frame of "Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone," the soundtrack entered the Canadian album charts at #44 -- ahead of System Of A Down's "Toxicity."

In the U.S., where the film is titled "Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone", the album didn't break the top 50.

The popstars are joining Sheryl Crow, Gloria Estefan, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, and the Dixie Chicks in an auction to benefit Sept. 11 relief charities, MTV reports.

Fans and collectors can visit www.gloryauction.com to bid on the items, which include a velvet coat with a faux fur collar that Britney wore to a Madonna show, and a designer, crystal-beaded gown Britney wore to the 2000 American Music Awards.

A dress worn by Beyonce of Destiny's Child on the cover of Vanity Fair is also up for sale, and so is an orange crocheted top and pink bra Pink wore for her video "Get The Party Started".

Actresses who donated items include Gwyneth Paltrow, Katie Holmes, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Halle Berry, Penelope Cruz, and Charlize Theron, while actors John Travolta and Adam Sandler also put clothes up for bidding.

The clothes were donated by the celebrity who wore them or by the designers. In addition to their outfit, the highest bidders will get a photo of the celebrity wearing the clothes.

Britney Spears at Crossroads of her career?
By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun

TORONTO -- Britney Spears, the pop star, is a given.

But Britney Spears, the movie star? We'll see.

The 19-year-old singer-dancer makes her leading lady debut in the teen romantic-comedy Crossroads, due in theatres Feb. 15.

"Making the movie, honestly, was probably one of the things I'm most proud of that I've done so far," Spears said at a press conference before her Air Canada Centre show Monday. "I came up with the concept for the movie a year ago. I saw the rough cut two weeks ago and it's just really special. The movie is really heartfelt, it's just a chick movie. You want to just watch it with your girlfriends. ... And I would love to do more acting."

The movie, about three high school teenagers who go on a post-graduation roadtrip, also stars a couple of Canadians -- Dan Aykroyd and Kim Cattrall.

"Dan Aykroyd was great. He was phenomenal," said Spears when asked about him specifically.

One scene in the film depicts Spears and her girlfriends singing along in the car to the radio blasting NSYNC's Bye Bye Bye, while their male driver refuses to take part.

Apparently, Spears' real-life boyfriend, NSYNC's Justin Timberlake filed a good-natured complaint.

"He was like, 'Ew, why did you do that?' I was like, 'Why?' He goes, 'All the nerds liked my song. The cool guy didn't like it.' "

Spears also sings in the movie during a karaoke scene. The tune is Joan Jett's I Love Rock 'N' Roll -- which is also included on her just-released album, Britney.

"I sing I Love Rock 'N' Roll all the time in karaoke bars, so when they asked me what I wanted to sing, 'I was like, 'Okay, let's do I Love Rock 'N' Roll.' So then I got (producer) Rodney Jerkins to come in and remix it and spice it up a little."

Given recent movie bombs from singers-turned-actors Mariah Carey (Glitter) and NYSNC's Lance Bass (On The Line), does Spears hold out much hope that she will fare any better?

"I don't think this movie is this huge Hollywood movie," she said. "For me, it was a personal thing. It was very family oriented. I think that's what attracts people to the movie so much, is it's just really real.

"I want people, the people who do go to see it, just to see that it's heartfelt and just to have a good feeling inside when they leave. That's all that I can pray for."

Britney Spears safe from dangerous pyro
    By STEPHANIE McGRATH -- AllPop

TORONTO -- Despite rumours and Internet reports that claimed threats and Anthrax paranoia forced Britney Spears to twice postpone her tour, the diva herself says it was a potent virus and scary pyrotechnics that caused the delays.

"I got a really bad virus and I'm just getting over it now," Spears said during a press conference Monday afternoon in Toronto just hours before her show at the Air Canada Centre (Nov. 5). "Actually, in our rehearsals, the day before the show in Washington where we were supposed to (open), I almost got blown up by pyro because all the technical stuff wasn't safe."

That being said, Spears admits the recent events in the U.S. have affected her. Security for Monday's press conference was very tight and unforgiving to those reporters arriving late or without the proper credentials. Bags were searched before anyone could even get on the elevator to the press conference area.

Once inside, those with photo passes were told they were not permitted to cross a certain marker to get closer to Britney and snap a tighter shot. Photographers were warned that anyone who crossed the line would be immediately ejected from the room. And anyone without a separate pass to the press conference room was not permitted into the area and had to leave after being given exactly two minutes to take photos.

"We all can't sit here on pins and needles," said Spears when asked how she's dealing with the events in the U.S., "and I just have to have faith and pray every night that our nation will take care of us, and I've heightened my security in a major way. It's kind of ridiculous."

But Spears says her live shows, in support of her new album "Britney", can help to alleviate some of the stress her young fans might be feeling.

"I think it's a cool thing that kids can get away from home for a little bit and escape and just come and have a good time and be entertained," she said.

Having a good time and remaining upbeat was the theme of the conference as Spears joked about her fitness regime (no Doritos before live shows), mugged with a can of Pepsi (one of her corporate sponsors), and revealed her mother's opinion on her racy "I'm A Slave 4 U" video -- "she thought it was ... different".

Spears, whose famous *Nsync boyfriend Justin Timberlake will be at the Toronto concert, said her new live show is both "seriously entertaining" and "intimate". There will also be approximately 13 costume changes during the show and a chance for Spears to demonstrate her musical prowess as she plays an instrument live onstage tonight. (All signs point to the piano.)

Other topics covered during the press event included:

Her new film, "Crossroads": "It's not like this huge Hollywood movie. It's a personal thing. It's heartfelt. [It's] probably one of the things I'm most proud of. It's just really special. It's a chic movie."

Her new album: "It's really just a reflection of me."

Her opinion on whether or not her third album will be as successful as her previous two: "It would be really, really nice, but that's not what I'm going for here."

Her personal style: "Jeans and a cute vintage top and boots to add some height."

Spears will perform live at the Air Canada Centre Monday (Nov. 5). Check back tonight for a review of the show, with a live photo gallery to follow on Tuesday.

    Spears delays Britney tour
By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun

Oops ... She did it again.

Teen pop queen Britney Spears has delayed -- for the second time -- the start of her tour, this time due to production delays.

    "Britney"

Spears was set to start her roadtrip tomorrow night in Washington, D.C., but will now launch her tour on Thursday night in Columbus, Ohio, where she is currently rehearsing on her "innovative and unique" stage in the round, according to her record label.

The Spears tour was originally going to begin on Oct. 26 in Miami but was delayed when the singer came down with the flu.

The 19-year-old pop star is touring in support of her new album, Britney, due in stores on Nov. 6.

Spears is set to arrive in Toronto for a date at the Air Canada Centre on Nov. 5. A new block of seats has been released and are available at Ticketmaster, the ACC box office or can be charged by phone to 416-870-8000.

The Washington date has been rescheduled for Dec. 21, and her New York City show at Madison Square Garden has been moved from Dec. 4 to 5.

    Britney discusses "Britney"

Britney Spears is over a bad case of the flu and is looking forward to the release of her new album, tour, and movie.

"Britney" will hit stores on Nov. 6, and the pop diva will kick off her tour dates on Oct. 31 in Washington, D.C., Billboard reports.

"I really think they'll come to the show and get a really good idea of who I really am," Britney said about her fans who plan to see her in concert. "The main thing is for people to leave feeling inspired."

As far as the album is concerned, Britney told MTV that she's excited about "Britney" because she wrote more of the music than she did for her previous albums, "Baby One More Time" and "Oops I Did It Again".

Following "I'm A Slave 4 U" as the second single off "Britney" will be "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman," which was written by Dido and well-known producers Max Martin and Rami.

The song is the only ballad on "Britney", and apparently "it's really where I'm at right now and something I can really relate to," Britney told MTV.

Another notable song off of "Britney" is What It's Like To Be Me", which was co-written by Wade Robson and Britney's boyfriend Justin Timberlake. Britney said she hopes Justin will have more input into her future albums,

In more Britney news, the singer's first film, "Crossroads", will be released on Feb. 15. The movie will feature Britney's version of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'N' Roll", which will also appear on "Britney".

AllPop will have a complete preview of "Britney" next week.

    Cher nixes Britney duet

Cher and Britney won't be teaming up after all.

Movie and music star Cher was originally supposed to perform with Britney on her Nov. 18 HBO special in Las Vegas, but now the aging diva says her schedule won't allow a duet with the pop princess, The New York Post reports.

"I've told Britney how disappointed I am because I am really looking forward to performing with her," Cher told tabloid. "We have been talking about this for over a year."

Cher's new CD, "Living Proof", is being released in Europe in November, which means the singer will have to be overseas to promote her music instead of being on stage with Britney.

"Britney has been extremely sweet and understanding", said Cher, "and I know we will do something together soon!"

Britney to release new video, enhanced CD

The countdown to the next slew of new Britney material is on.

First of all, Britney received an official apology for the robbery of her holiday home from the mayor of Destin, Florida where she, her boyfriend Justin Timberlake, and their family and friends were vacationing, MuchMusic reports.

Mayor Ken Beaird sent the pop queen a bouquet of flowers and an apology note for the inconvenience (although the stolen goods were quickly retrieved).

According to the singer's official website, her new CD, "Britney", will be enhanced and will come with an "exclusive performance" of her new tune "Overprotected", along with a sneak preview of her debut film scheduled for release in 2002. "Britney" will be in stores on Nov. 6.

If the new CD isn't enough to quench your Britney thirst, the diva will also be releasing a video titled "Britney: The Video" on VHS an DVD on Nov. 20. Britney.com says the video will include "behind the scenes footage from "Slave" and 'Overprotected,' performance footage, Britney videos, ...Oops videos, a movie trailer and more".

Britney Spears announces track list for new album

Eager Britney Spears fans can now learn the complete track listing for the star's third album, "Britney", which will hit the pop world on Nov. 6.

Britney co-wrote five of the 12 tracks and worked with producers/writers Max Martin, Justin Timberlake, Wade Robson, Rami and Rodney Jerkins.

Below is the track listing for the young star's latest effort:

    1."I'm A Slave 4 U"
    2."Overprotected"
    3."Lonely"
4."I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman"
    5."Boys"
    6."Anticipating"
    7."I Love Rock 'n' Roll"
    8."Cinderella"
    9."Let Me Be"
    10."Bombastic Love"
    11."That's Where You Take Me"
12."What It's Like To Be Me"

Britney has already given the world a taste of the new material with her new single "I'm A Slave 4 U", which she debuted at the MTV Video Music Awards this month. The song was written and produced by The Neptunes and is a departure from her previous, high-energy/light-pop hits.

"What It's Like To Be Me" is the song Britney worked on with her *Nsync star boyfriend Justin Timberlake, who also provides background vocals for the tune.

Britney has already filmed a video for "Slave" which features the singer dancing in an Asian bath house, MTV reports. The choreography employed in the video is said to be the same as the moves Britney performed for the Video Music Awards audience.

Britney has also shot a video for the ballad "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman".

And the new Britney album is called ...

ATTENTION, POP FANS: AllPop has learned the title of Britney Spears' new album.

Britney's coming back ... well, she's actually never left the spotlight, not since "Baby One More Time" hit the market, anyway. But she is hitting the pop world with the full force of her mega-fame and the full force of her boyfriend's mega-fame with a new album titled ... "Britney".

"Britney" will storm record stores on Nov. 6 and features the new single "I'm A Slave 4 U" and an extra special treat for *Nsync fans: a song co-written by Britney's boyfriend Justin Timberlake and choreographer/songwriter Wade Robson. "What It's Like To Be Me" also features Justin on background vocals, MTV reports.

People behind the star say that Britney's new material won't be as sugary as her previous work. Fans got a taste of the new, grown-up Britney during last week's MTV Video Music Awards, where Britney debuted "I'm A Slave 4 U", that Janet Jackson-style number with the slinky chorus. (AllPop wasn't' a huge fan of the new tune, but we are willing to give Britney's whole album a listen before we start peppering the Web with heartbroken messages reading: "Why Britney? Why!".)

In an effort to start building momentum for her album in advance, Britney plans to head out on tour on Oct. 25 in Miami. She'll hit Toronto, her only Canadian tour stop, on Nov. 5.

Robson told MTV that her tour will be "theatrical" and will help Britney graduate from teen pop princess to grown-up superstar.

"You're gonna learn a lot more about her as a person," Robson told MTV. "The show is gonna be really about how she's becoming a woman, how she's finding herself and her independence. She knows what she wants to do, she knows who she wants to be, and that's what the show's about."

Robson went on to say that Britney's upcoming live performances will include her old hits but they'll be freshened up and taken "in a new direction".

Music isn't the only front Britney's planning to spread her wings over. The singer will make her acting debut in February with a film tentatively titled "Not A Girl".

Britney told MTV that her upcoming album will feature two tracks -- "Overprotected" and "I'm Not A Girl" -- that are featured in the movie.

In the film, Britney plays Lucy, a semi-dorky (Britney's word) girl with a controlling father (played by Dan Aykroyd). Lucy and two of her friends decide to embark on a road trip and eventually meet up with a musician who convinces the girls to head to Los Angeles to enter a musical competition.

"The whole movie is about this journey that the three of us best friends take, finding ourselves and what we want out of life and getting our friendship back," she told MTV. "Friends are all you have at the end of the day. When your boyfriend breaks up with you, who do you call? Your girlfriend. I just love that message."

The singer went on to say that although her movie will be a teen flick, it does deal with serious issues such as date-rape and eating disorders.

So what do you think about Britney's upcoming career moves? Will the reigning pop princess begin to fade away, or will her new album and movie catapult her into a Madonna-like stratosphere?

Spears debuts new single at MTV Video Awards
    By STEPHANIE McGRATH -- AllPop

Over three hours after MTV kicked off their Video Awards Ceremony, pop princess Britney Spears took the stage to debut her brand new single, "I'm A Slave 4 U".

For pop fans and belly-button enthusiasts alike, Spears' performance was expected to be the climax of the evening. But, after being upstaged by Michael Jackson's surprise dance-off with *Nsync and The Ramones appearance onstage, Spears' new song dropped with a thud and sucked the energy out of the ego-infested ceremony.

Britney Spears at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards

Decked out in a green bra, a flimsy skirt and an enormous belly-ring, Spears writhed with large snakes and most certainly infuriated PETA by parading caged wild cats on-stage.

The song was a huge step away from the bouncy pop that made her a superstar. Tinged with Janet Jackson style breathy vocals and a slinky, moany beat, the song was Spears' attempt to leave behind her pigtails and chirpy image.

"All you people look at me like I'm a little girl," she crooned. "I'm a...slaaaaaave for you."

Well, she's certainly grown up since the "Baby One More Time" days of yesteryear and after all the hip wiggling that went on during her MTV VMA performance, there will probably be very few fans thinking of her as a little girl.

Unfortunately for Spears', "I'm A Slave 4 U" does not suit her style. The vocals are forced and the Janet Jackson slinkiness is unnatural. If this is supposed to be Spears' next big hit, the song that catapults her into the next stage of her career, it misses the target. The song isn't catchy enough to pelt radio like "Oops" did and isn't grown up enough to help her take the next step.

Bad move Brit baby; they call you the princess of pop for a reason. Stick with what works.

Spears' new album will hit stores on November 6 so fans will have to wait until then to find out if "I'm A Slave 4 U" was just a bad choice for a single or if their beloved pop princess has lost her crown.

    Britney keeps secret from parents?

Britney Spears might be in a bit of trouble with her parents.

Although the teen pop princess is known to be chaste and well-behaved, there is a rumour that she's currently living with her boyfriend Justin Timberlake, something that she didn't tell her parents, muchmusic.com reports.

During an interview with YM magazine, Britney says she simply "forgot" to tell her parents that she and the *Nsync star are sharing the same home.

In more Britney news, the singer's plans for debuting her latest single during the MTV Music Video Awards have upset animal-rights groups.

Britney will sing "I'm A Slave 4 U" at the awards show this Thursday -- and she will be joined on stage by four cheetahs locked in cages.

"We hope you'll open your heart to the plight of captive 'wild' animals caged and forced to tolerate bright lights, crowds, and frightening levels of noise," PETA's Dan Mathews wrote in a letter asking Britney to reconsider her cheetah plan, The New York Post reports.

"Cheetahs used in show business are often trained through intimidation and with such devices as electric shock prods and sticks.

"Whippings, beatings, and starvation are common methods used to break the spirit of free-roaming, independent animals."

Britney's next album comes out Nov. 6.

    Britney discusses working with Justin

Even Britney Spears is nervous around Justin Timberlake.

Although Justin is the pop princess's boyfriend, Britney said she was "a little nervous" recording a song titled "What It's Like To Be Me" with him as he acted as a co-producer, MTV reports.

Britney said that she found having Justin act as a co-producer on the song which he also co-wrote with Wade Robson, a bit "awkward" until she took a deep breath and forgot about the boyfriend factor.

"But then I just totally forgot that he was my boyfriend, and I just said, 'Britney, just do the vocals, don't be nervous, don't be retarded like this,'" she told MTV. "But it ended up being fine, actually. At the very end ... I got the best vocals I've ever done."

Britney is now figuring out the rest of the track listing for her new album, due Nov. 6. Three songs confirmed for the album by Jive Records are "I'm A Slave 4 U", which will be the first single, "Lonely", and a cover of "I Love Rock 'N' Roll".

Britney has several other tracks that are still being considered for the album ,including "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman", which was co-written by U.K. popstar Dido, and "Overprotected".

    Britney Spears Q & A

Britney Spears, a.k.a. the princess of pop, was in the middle of a hectic European tour earlier this fall to promote her latest album "Oops!...I Did It Again," when she sat down in Berlin, Germany, to answer AllPop's questions.

AllPop: What was the first song you ever performed in front of an audience?

Britney: I don't even remember. It was probably a traditional song which I performed in school, but it was so long ago that I have forgotten!

AllPop: What is the one question you wish interviewers would stop asking you, and why?

Britney: There is not really any question. So many of the questions are repeated that I don't have problems with any one in particular.

AllPop: When can fans expect a follow-up to "Oops", and what can they expect from it?

Britney: Wow. Well, I'm just releasing the third single, which is "Stronger", so I don't know when the next album will come out. I still feel like this album is fresh, so I want to keep touring to support it. I'm currently on my first tour of Europe, so it's very exciting.

AllPop: In a university-level pop culture class 100 years in the future, a section of the class text book is devoted to you. What do you hope the chapter says was your greatest triumph?

Britney: Probably to be the youngest female to achieve a #1 album and #1 single.

Also, hopefully people will remember me for great songs.

AllPop: Finish this sentence found in the futuristic text book: "At the age of 60, Britney Spears retired from showbiz and spent her free time ..."

Britney: With her kids, grandkids and several dogs on a ranch in Louisiana!

AllPop: If you weren't an entertainer, you'd consider a career in ?

Britney: I'd probably be a grade-school teacher like my mom.

AllPop: You're offered the lead role in three major films: "Dirty Dancing 2," "American Pie 2," and a remake of "Gone With The Wind". Which role would you pick, and why?

Britney: Probably none of the above.

AllPop: Will fans be seeing you in "Grease 3" with *Nsync?

Britney: No, those were just rumours. I will definitely not be in the new version of "Grease".

AllPop: If you could change anything about your lifestyle, what would it be?

Britney: I would probably try to not be so hard working and devote more time to my family.

AllPop: What was the very first extravagance you indulged in when your career took off? (Example: an article of clothing? jewelry?)

Britney: I bought a white Mercedes convertible back home in Louisiana last year. It's sad that I'm never home to drive it!

AllPop: You have a chance to address a room full of people who have spread false rumours about you. What do you say?

Britney: Stop making up stories to sell papers.

AllPop: You meet your absolute, number 1 fan, who wants to know if you can give him or her advice about getting into the music business. What do you say to him/her ?

Britney: Keep trying, and hold on to your dreams.

AllPop: What charitable cause are you most interested in supporting, and why?

Britney: The Britney Spears Foundation, which provides free arts education to financially underprivileged kids. I spent some time with the kids this summer at a camp in upstate NY, and it was a great and rewarding experience.
