It's time more women stepped into the Information Technology industry.
Women represent 50% of the general workforce, but according to statistics, have just 20% representation in the IT workforce. But Lambton College is working to change that.
On Wednesday, Feb. 27, starting at 7 p.m., the college will host a Women in Information Technology Evening, with some of the top women employed in the local IT industry leading a discussion about the unique challenges and opportunities facing women. Successful IT experts will offer advice and share experiences in a field where women traditionally earn higher wages than their male counterparts.
"Women have shied away from the information technology career path in the past. But they have unique characteristics that are of benefit in these team-oriented jobs. Women are in high demand in the IT industry," said Dave Gotts, director of computer training. Women are looking to the IT industry as they change career paths and upgrade skills.
Lambton College offers a number of IT programs, from its one-year intensive Information Technology Professional (ITP) program or Professional Webmaster program, to certifications in Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS), Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) and Certified Cisco Network Associate.
The Women in Information Technology Evening will be held at Lambton College's Business and Industry Centre, Room N105.
