Feds launch 2003 summer job program

Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada, and Ethel Blondin-Andrew, Secretary of State (Children and Youth), recently launched Student Summer Job Action 2003.

This is part of the federal government's commitment to help Canadian students find summer jobs that will help them develop the skills they need to prepare for the future.

SSJA is designed to create summer employment opportunities for secondary and post-secondary students.

"We all know how imperative it is to prepare tomorrow's work force," Stewart said. "Through these initiatives, and with the help of employers from all sectors of the economy, we are increasing the chance for our students to build their careers while they are developing the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the future.

"I would also like to encourage employers to hire students with disabilities. We have special provisions that can help them hire these young people," Stewart added.

"The Human Resources Development Canada offices for students are the heart of Student Summer Job Action," Blondin-Andrew said.

"This year marks the 35th anniversary of these offices, and I encourage employers and students to use their services to meet their summer employment needs. For 35 years, the summer employment offices have helped millions of young people find work during the summer months, and have helped employers access qualified summer help."

Employers and students interested in participating in one of the federal government's student summer initiatives are invited to contact their nearest HRDC office, visit the Youth Employment Information Web site at www.youth.gc.ca, or call the toll-free Youth Info Line at 1-800-935-5555 for their free copy of the Student Summer Job Action 2003 brochure.
