Job seeker finds the right tools

Stephen George came into the WoodGreen Youth Job Centre interested in becoming an apprentice. He had some very basic understanding of plumbing, but no Canadian work experience.

Through the MTCU-funded Job Connect Program, George was provided with information and guidance that enabled him to clarify his career goals and interests and gain more information on being an apprentice.

Once George was clear on his goals he met with Eleen Darlington, a job developer at WoodGreen, who coached him on the commitment level required to become an apprentice.

Darlington spoke to Adrian Lew of Copperhead Plumbing and Heating about a fully subsidized job trial to assess George on the job.

The two-week trial was a success and George was presented with a training placement opportunity.

The placement went well and as a result George now works full time with Copperhead Plumbing and Heating and is learning new skills every day.

Darlington continues to work closely with Lew to help him meet the company's hiring demands.

"It is essential that youth are given a foot in the door of the work world by employers like Copperhead Plumbing and Heating," Darlington says. "Adrian Lew realizes the importance of training youth today so that we have a skilled workforce in the future."

On the hiring side, Lew says the staff at WoodGreen are helpful and efficient. "The Job Connect program helped me to find a great employee and in turn, I have been able to help Stephen get his career started as an apprentice."
