JC salons (Johnny Cupello & Associates), one of Toronto's top award- winning hair salons, has been working with Youth Employment Service by providing meaningful training opportunities for youth interested in the hairstyling field.
Jennifer Jeremiah began looking for work as a hairstyling apprentice shortly after immigrating to Canada. Unable to find work and feeling discouraged, she contacted Youth Employment Service to obtain assistance in her job search. Career counsellor Jennifer Fergus helped her develop a plan to prepare for entering the Canadian labour market.
Anita Cupello took a chance on apprentice Jennifer Jeremiah.
Jeremiah also worked with Braum Fader, a Job Developer who introduced her to Anita and Johnny Cupello of JC Salons. Cupello wanted to try her out for a short time before committing to taking her on as an apprentice. Anita was impressed with Jeremiah during her trial period and as a result Jeremiah was registered as a hair styling apprentice. Anita describes Jeremiah as being "hardworking and (she) has the will to learn. She also has good work ethics and is a team player."
Jeremiah is very thankful for the career opportunity at JC Salons.
"My communication skills have improved. I learned customer service skills, colour and cutting (techniques) and I take classes here," Jeremiah says.
One year later, Jeremiah is working as a personal assistant to the artistic educational director at JC Salons. She is continuing to learn a lot in this field and loves her work.
"The Job Connect program is beneficial in terms of finding good candidates and receiving a training subsidy incentive that assists employers in training new employees to the needs of their business," Anita says.
