B.Comm.com: Retail management goes online

Ryerson University is out to sell what it bills as the world's first degree in retail management taught over the Internet.

The school started the web-based bachelor of commerce program in January with 64 students who "benefit from a flexible program that allows participants to study without interrupting their careers."

The curriculum includes online discussions, team activities, multimedia clips and virtual libraries.

The program claims support from retailers including Hudson's Bay Co., Loblaw and Sears Canada, which have contributed money and enrolled employees.

"Ryerson's retail Internet degree is an 'earn as you learn' approach to education that lets top performers stay in their current careers while they return to school," says Deane Collinson, executive vice-president of Loblaw Supermarkets.

"As an employer, we like the program since it's a way to further develop some of our high-potential employees on their way to management positions within the company."

The B.Comm. degree in retail management, at www.ryersonretail.com, focuses on customer service, people skills, technology and strategy.
