Gretzky from Start to Finish

A Great message for youth
By BARRE CAMPBELL -- Ottawa Sun
Youth hockey goes through its good times, and its bad, just like almost everything else in the world.
The past week was a Great One.
At the Hockey Hall of Fame inductions, youth hockey was in the spotlight.
When Wayne Gretzky spoke about his entry into the Hall, the greatest player who ever played the game recalled the days of his youth in Brantford and the time he spent in the frigid arenas developing his skills.

Exposure compromising Great reputation
By CHRIS STEVENSON -- SLAM! Sports
TORONTO - Yes, absolutely, Wayne Gretzky is The Great One, always will be, and yes, he deserves all the accolades, attention and outpouring of affection Monday on the occasion of his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
But there's a part of me that would like to see him in a pair of polyester pants with a white belt hitched up almost to his armpits, bundling Janet and the kids into a station wagon with the license plate "GREAT 1" and driving to Florida, all the time with his left blinker going.

Kid's in the Hall
By CHRIS NELSON -- Calgary Sun Editor-in-Chief
TORONTO -- If a man can be a metaphor for a nation, then here, on the cusp of a new millennium, Laurier may stand vindicated.

All's said and done
By TERRY JONES -- Edmonton Sun
TORONTO - He didn't break down, like Scotty Morrison did at the mention of his late son.
He didn't mess up, like Stompin' Tom Connors who forgot the words to the "second period'' of his trademark song The Good Old Hockey Game.

Great 1 memories
By JIM KERNAGHAN -- London Free Press
TORONTO -- A brain aneurysm left some memories of his son's hockey exploits sketchy, but Walter Gretzky remembers one as though it happened five minutes ago.
"Wayne phoned after a game in Edmonton one night," Walter recalled at his celebrated son's induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame yesterday. "He said 'Dad, I did it, I did it. Fifty in 39.' I remember saying back `What took you so long?' It's something I'll always remember."
