Friday, September 15, 2000Beatrice (North York) Aeros 2000 PreviewRepeating as champions in the cards for Aeros?
2000 Ontario Champions (Sr. AAA). 2000 National Champions. 2000 NWHL Champions. The Beatrice Aeros success last year did not come by coincidence: the team has a long tradition for developing female hockey players with their Junior Aeros system. But is there anything else to prove? Dominating the NWHL this year is on the plate, with all-star players Geraldine Heaney, Angela James and future stars Cherie Piper, Cheryl Muranko and Sommer West. Offensively, there were 11 players with over 20 points on the season last year. Piper and Amy Turek led the team with 26 goals apiece, while Heaney lead the league with 38 assists. As a team, the Aeros scored 217 goals, averaging 5.42 goals per game. Goaltending has been one of their top assets. Kendra Fisher is back with the Aeros for another season. Fisher was 17-1-0 with 0.72 goals-against average and 11 shutouts. The loss of Stephanie Kay to the Brampton Thunder will hurt, but not enough to make a difference on a deep organization like the Aeros. New additions include Cindy Cryderman on defense and Heather Logan and Jillian Apps up front.
