Thursday, September 30, 1999 Shtalenkov will start for CoyotesPHOENIX (CP) -- Much-travelled goaltender Mikhail Shtalenkov will get the start Saturday when the Phoenix Coyotes open their NHL season in St. Louis.Nikolai Khabibulin would normally get the nod, but he's absent in a contract dispute. He wants a five-year, $25-million US contract, and GM Bobby Smith has declined to oblige. "I think I can do the job," Shtalenkov told the Arizona Republic. "Hopefully, with hard work and a little luck I'll do it. All goalies need luck." Shtalenkov, 33, was 1-2-1 in four starts with Phoenix and 12-17-3 in 34 appearances with the Edmonton Oilers last season. Bob Essensa, 34, will the backup.
