Sunday, February 20, 2000 2,000 points doesn't impress MessMark Messier reached yet another milestone yesterday afternoon. The Canucks captain collected his 2,000th NHL career point, including playoffs, with an assist on Markus Naslund's first-period goal. Messier made a perfect cross-ice pass to Naslund, who beat Ron Tugnutt for a 1-0 lead. "I wasn't really too aware of that," said Messier, who downplayed the significance of hitting the 2,00 mark. "I don't think it's any kind of milestone, but I guess it's a big round number." Messier later collected an assist on Darby Hendrickson's empty-net goal to clinch Vancouver's 3-1 win. Messier is now nine points shy of tying Gordie Howe for No. 2 on the all-time point-getter list, but still 1,238 points behind former teammate Wayne Gretzky. This past season Messier moved ahead of Mario Lemieux to take sole possession of sixth place on the NHL all-time scoring list. Messier is fourth on the all-time NHL assist leader list with 1,073, and also holds the No. 4 position in the all-time points scoring list with 1,694. Since Gretzky's retirement, he is the leading scorer and point-getter among active players. The 39-year-old is also seventh on the all-time NHL games played list. And if that's not enough, Messier is only the sixth player in NHL history to play in four different decades. At this point, however, Messier says he's much more interested in seeing the numbers his team can put up in the final stretch of the season as it tries to climb into playoff contention.
