    Canucks sign two players

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- The Vancouver Canucks, preparing for the June 23 expansion draft, signed defenseman Greg Hawgood and center Darby Hendrickson.

Expansion rules require teams to expose at least one forward and one defenseman under contract, enabling the Canucks to leave Hawgood and Hendrickson for selection. The Canucks will lose two players in the expansion draft.

Hawgood agreed Friday to a one-year deal for $450,000, the same as he made last year. Hendrickson took a $250,000 pay cut and signed for $500,000.

Hendrickson, 27, appeared in 40 games last season and scored five goals. The Minnesota native could be chosen by the expansion Minnesota Wild or Columbus Blue Jackets.

"Being from Minnesota, it would be special to play in Minnesota," he said. "We'll see how it plays out."

Hawgood, 31, would have become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
