Friday, September 24, 1999 A Mess o' fun!The Vancouver Canucks captain is scheduled to be a part of the festivities here a week from today as The Great One's No. 99 is raised to the rafters at Skyreach Centre. "I'm trying to get there," Messier told The Sun last night. "We're playing the next night. It's something I don't want to miss." The Canucks open their regular season Oct. 2 at home versus the New York Rangers, who will be the Edmonton Oilers' opponent on what will be a night to remember here Oct. 1. Is Messier looking forward to the festivities? "Sure," he stated reluctantly. Messier and Gretzky played nine seasons together before No. 99 was traded to Los Angeles on Aug. 9, 1988. The former St. Albert Saint became the Oilers' captain after the off-season move which stunned the entire city and hockey world. Messier will also be joined by Gretzky's former right-hand man Jari Kurri, who is leaving his native Finland Sunday to join in the festivities. The two were unable to attend the Boys on the Bus Reunion earlier this summer, but will surely more than make up for it on Friday.
