Thursday, December 9, 1999Canucks 2, MIGHTY DUCKS 2Kariya brothers teams play evenANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- The Kariya brothers played to a standoff in their first meeting as Anaheim and Vancouver tied 2-2 on Wednesday night. Paul Kariya, Anaheim's All-Star winger, tied the score at 1 with a power-play goal -- while Steve Kariya sat in the penalty box -- at 11:24 of the second period. The Vancouver rookie assisted on the first-period goal that gave the Canucks a 1-0 lead. The deadlock didn't reverse either team's fortunes. Anaheim, behind the continued strong play of goalie Guy Hebert, who made his 11th consecutive start Wednesday, is 3-1-2 in its last six games. The Canucks remained with only one win in their last six contests (1-4-1). The teams exchanged goals early in the third period, after 40 sluggish minutes had left them in a 1-1 tie. Bill Muckalt snapped the tie by wristing a shot between Hebert's legs at the 1:41 mark, before the Ducks' recharged power play drew them back into a tie. Steve Rucchin's off-balanced shot from just left of the goal made it 2-2 at 5:27, 21 seconds after Murray Baron drew a hooking call. It was Anaheim's second power-play conversion of the game. Paul Kariya had tied the game at 1 by lining a 50-foot shot past Garth Snow at the 11:24 mark of the second period, less than a minute after brother Steve had drawn a penalty for elbowing. The Anaheim All-Star's goal snapped a streak of 25 consecutive failed power play opportunities. It was only the Ducks' fifth goal in their last 53 opportunities with the man advantage. Steve Kariya had earlier contributed to Vancouver's 1-0 lead, assisting along with Harold Druken on Markus Naslund's goal at 6:32 of the first period. Summary
