Wednesday, December 1, 1999Avalanche 4, CANUCKS 2Podein keys Colorado winVANCOUVER (CP) -- Shjon Podein capitalized on a defensive zone miscue early in the third period and the Colorado Avalanche won their second straight NHL game Tuesday night, 4-2 over the Vancouver Canucks. Podein broke a 2-2 tie with his third goal of the season, second in as many games, when he intercepted Canuck Todd Bertuzzi's clearing attempt and beat goalie Kevin Weekes with a quick shot 45 seconds into the period. Brian Rolston added an insurance goal on a backhander off a rebound after Chris Drury hit the post. Martin Skoula and Milan Hejduk also scored for Colorado, who got a 23-save performance from Patrick Roy, including a diving grab of a Markus Naslund backhand to preserve the lead in the third period. He also forced Andrew Cassels to shoot wide on a penalty shot late in the game. Defencemen Greg Hawgood and Adrian Aucoin scored for Vancouver, which is winless in five games. The Avalanche moved within a point of the Northwest Division leaders. The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period as man-advantaage opportunities figured in both goals. Skoula drifted a point shot past a screened Weekes to give Colorado a 1-0 lead with 15 seconds left in the league's top-ranked power play. Hawgood replied for the Canucks when his slapshot from the left boards squeezed between Roy's arm and the post. Jon Klemm of the Avalanche hadn't got back into the play after serving a minor penalty. The teams traded second-period power-play goals. Hejduk gave Colorado the lead when he stickhandled from the corner to bank the puck in off Weekes, his 15th of the season. Aucoin tied the game with 1:50 left. The goal was only the second in Vancouver's last 32 power plays. Notes: The Canucks play five of their next six games against Northwest Division opponents. ... Avalanche centre Joe Sakic didn't make the trip because of a rib cartilege proglem. ... The Canucks also have injury problems and called up centre Harold Druken and defenceman Ryan Bonni from their AHL Syracuse farm club. Summary
