Wednesday, November 10, 1999Sharks 4, CANUCKS 4, OTCanucks lose Messier in tieVANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- Owen Nolan scored twice as the NHL-leading San Jose Sharks rallied back from a three-goal deficit to pull out a 4-4 tie against the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night. Markus Naslund, Andrew Cassels and Harry York had a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who blew a 3-0 second period lead and lost captain Mark Messier to an knee injury in the first minute of the game. Bill Muckalt also scored for the Canucks, who are winless in their last six meetings with San Jose (0-4-2), going back to Feb. 7, 1998. Alexander Korolyuk had a goal and two assists and Patrick Marleau also scored for the Sharks, who gave up four goals for the first time in seven outings and are winless in their last three road games (0-2-1). Four minutes after Muckalt scored to put the Canucks ahead 4-3, Nolan, standing in front of the Canuck net, deflected in Korolyuk's shot for a power-play goal to tie the game with 11:02 left in regulation. York, with the Canucks' league-leading sixth short-handed goal, and Cassels scored 58 seconds apart to stake Vancouver to a 2-0 lead 9:32 into the game. After Naslund scored 1:39 into the second to make it 3-0, the Sharks rallied back to eventually tie the game with three goals before the period was over. Marleau and Korolyuk, with a power-play goal, cut the Canucks' lead to 3-2 by the 12:43 mark of the second period. The Sharks' comeback was complete on a fluke goal with 2:48 left in the frame. The play began innocently as Vancouver goalie Corey Schwab attempted to gather in a puck off the end boards. Instead, Schwab failed to glove the puck and it bounced in off his skate. The goal was credited to Nolan, the last Sharks player to touch the puck. Messier suffered a knee injury a minute into the game and did not return. The injury occurred when Messier, on his first shift, was going to the front of the Sharks' net. Sharks' defenseman Andy Sutton grabbed Messier from behind and pulled him down. The two fell to the ice with Messier's right leg tangled between Sutton's. After a couple of minutes on his hands and knees swearing and throwing down his helmet, he was helped off the ice, unable to put any weight on his right knee. A Canucks' official announced to the media that, "Messier had suffered a knee injury and will not return." According to a Canuck official, Messier spent the rest of the game icing his knee while doctors attempted to examine it. The severity of the injury was unknown. Last season, Messier missed 18 games with a sprained MCL in his left knee. Last month, the 21-year NHL veteran scored his 614th career goal, moving him sixth place on the all-time scoring list, passing Mario Lemieux. Prior to the game, the Canucks announced that defenseman Mattias Ohlund will undergo surgery on his right eye Wednesday after his vision failed to come back since being hit in the face with a puck in September.
