Deadly skies

The Woodstock Tornado Twenty-five years ago today, on Aug. 7, 1979, nature delivered a blow to the Woodstock area that would affect the lives of thousands. Two tornadoes packing winds up to 400 kilometres an hour touched down, one southeast of Stratford, the other northwest of Woodstock. A third, smaller tornado hit farther south. In 90 minutes, two people would be dead, 130 injured and 1,000 left homeless. Damage was estimated at $100 million. The Free Press talked to survivors, who vividly recall the day a vicious black cloud descended and changed their lives and communities forever.

Paul Zilke can tell you he ate chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream topped with raspberries for dessert Aug. 7, 1979. He can even tell you he was standing in his kitchen looking out a window when one of Canada's worst tornadoes flattened his family's Hickson-area farm 25 years ago today.
