Large women are becoming more visible in mainstream media -- think actor Kathy Bates and model Mia Tyler on the cover of Flare Magazine last year -- but the public has yet to see plump in beauty pageants. On June 21, Toronto will see the first Miss Canada Plus Size Pageant. Eight voluptuous women of diverse backgrounds will model designs from Penningtons, Rubenesque, Toni Plus, Malanay Design and Linda Lundstrom.
As with other beauty pageants the women will be judged on beauty, poise, grace, eloquence and talent, but also self-image and their sense of inclusion in the world of fashion and professional careers.
The event will benefit the National Eating Disorder Information Centre at Toronto General Hospital.
