Thunder is expected to hit the eastern U.S. in November, with the announcement Saturday night by the Philadelphia, PA based Ring of Honor promotion that New Japan Pro Wrestling superstar Jushin “Thunder” Liger will be making a rare appearance on North American soil.
Dubbed “A Weekend of Thunder” Ring of Honor hits the Boston area on November 5 and the Rexplex in Elizabeth, New Jersey on November 6. Fans are buzzing about what top-level talent will face the Japanese legend on the two shows.
Liger’s early years were spent under the tutelage of Stu Hart in Calgary. Fans who saw a young Keichi Yamada in Stampede Wrestling likely didn’t realize that they were seeing one of the future innovators of high flying. Returning to his homeland, he soon donned his mask and become one of the top names in Japanese wrestling. The inventor of the Shooting Star Press, Liger has had epic battles in Japan with stars like Owen Hart, Chris Benoit, Ultimo Dragon, Great Sasuke, Tiger Mask and many more. For many up and comers, the chance to go to Japan and wrestle Liger is a dream come true.
Liger would make sporadic appearances in North America for WCW. His feud over the WCW Lightheavyweight title with Brian Pillman wowed fans and was ahead of its time. The two would lock up again, opening the first ever Monday Nitro. Liger’s last PPV appearance for the company was Starrcade 1995, when he defeated Chris Benoit in the opening match of the New Japan vs. WCW Cup, and he also briefly feuded with Juventude Guerrera.
Tickets are on sale for the Boston event now, and go on sale for New Jersey at their September 11 show at the Rexplex which features Mick Foley. For more information on tickets and updates on Liger visit www.rohwrestling.com
