    THOMAS GRANDI

Who says Canada only produces downhill, speed demons? Banff, Alberta's Thomas Grandi is living proof that Canadians can excell in the more refined technical alpine events, such as giant slalom and slalom, as his three top-15 placements on the World Cup circuit last season show. The 24-year-old Grandi first served notice that he was a legitimate contender in the technical events at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics when he posted a 14th-place finish. And then during the 1995-96 campaign, the Italian born athlete improved his standing even further when he posted a seventh-place showing in the combined event at the world alpine championships in Sierra Nevada, Spain.
It was last sesason though, with his three top-15 finishes in World Cup and eighth-place finish in the giant slalom in Sestrieres, Italy, when Grandi unequivocally proved to the ski world that he is here to stay and Canadian team officials believe that it's just a matter of time before Grandi, one of the best conditioned athletes on the team, lands on the medal podium with regularity. A big attraction in his native Italy, Grandi is constantly being urged to switch allegiance by legions of Italy fans who follow the World Cup.
