Melanie Turgeon - Alpine Skier
Born: Alma, Que.
Residence: Quebec City
Club: Mont Ste-Anne
Birthdate: 21/10/76
On national team since: 1992
Still only 20, Turgeon is beginning her fifth-year on the national squad, a
testamant to the talent this Quebec ski sensation brings to the team.
Turgeon stunned the alpine world in 1994 when she won an unprecedented five
medals at the world junior championships in Lake Placid, including gold in the
giant slalom and the combined event and then recorded a remarkable fifth-place
finish at the 1993 World Cup in Tignes, France - all after just turning 18.
After a couple of somewhat troubling seasons, when she was plagued by coaching,
injury and conditioning problems, Turgeon is quickly getting back up to speed,
working with national team coaches Piotr Jelen and Alberto Casse.
Turgeon has spent more time in dryland training than ever during this past
off-season, is healthy and determined to dramatically improve on her best
showing from last season, an 11th-place showing in the the downhill in Vail.
