In his first full season on the national team, Steven Elm caused quite a stir at the Olympic team trials when he qualified for the Games in the 1,500 metres. Elm, 22, is considered one of Canada's best performers in the 5,000-in fact he holds the Canadian record- but faired poorly in that event at the trials placing fifth when he self-admittedly tanked the race. "That performance at the trials in the 1,500 was a relief because I had let myself down in the 5,000," said Elm, a biological sciences student at the University of Calgary. "But I knew I'm capable of going fast." For his efforts was awarded an Olympic spot in the 5,000 anyway. Elm's main hobby is maintaining his 1978 Volkswagen camper bus. His sister Selina is also a nationally ranked speed skater and his mother Margaret competed at the Master's level. |
