  • Cindy Overland - Long Track Speed Skating

    Cindy Overland

One of the nicest surprises on the Canadian team this season are the performances of Cindy Overland in the 1,500 and 3,000 metre events. Overland has not been smashing world records like a couple of her teammates but her improvement is almost as substantial and she's on pace for a top-16 finish at the Olympic Games. Overland, who'll turn 22 during the Games, set a Canadian record in the 3,000 this season in a World Cup and also holds the mark in the 5,000.
"When I crossed the finish line for the 3,000 record I knew it could be faster," said Overland who set the mark in December. "There's so much left and I hope it'll come out a big event like the Olympics. My legs didn't feel 100 percent because we'd been on the road for a month."
Overland missed the entire 1994-95 season due to mononucleosis. She'll join her brother Kevin Overland, one of Canada's top medal contenders in long track speed skating at the Games.
